Taking too long to regulate???

My Bo was diagnosed with diabetes on January 2nd. He also has IBD, which is currently under control. We still don't have his diabetes regulated. He is taking 1 mg Budesonide and 0.7ml Metronidazole for his IBD. The vet feels the Budesonide may be interfering with regulating his diabetes. Bo is currently on 2.5 units of ProZinc twice a day. Any suggestions on what we can try? The vet is thinking we might reduce his Budesonide to alternate between 0.5 mg and 1 mg every other day.

He is eating Friskies pates, Nulo, and some ProPlan....all of which are low carb. He eats every 4 hours because he is soooooo very hungry lately and gets nauseous if I try to go longer than 4 hours between meals. Even then...he acts like he hasn't been fed in ages when it is time to feed him. The worst seems to be his 5:00PM feeding. He gets 3 oz at his two meals prior to injections. The other meals are only 1.1 oz each.

Some cats take more time than others to be "regulated". I never got my Bailey "regulated" after more than 5 years.
I have used budesonide for at least tow of my diabetic cats and it has little effect on BG/insulin needs

I have an IBD kittie also who is diabetic. I also have to feed him small meals 4 times a day because if he goes too long with no food and an empty stomach he throws up. My vet also mentioned that budesonide may effect the amount of insulin needed. I've heard differing thoughts on this so maybe what Larry mentioned and from his experience is a truer picture.

I have been trying since August to get Orion regulated. Prozinc wasn't doing it for him so we switched to Lantus. Every cat is different.

Looking at your ss i would go to 3.0 u next day you will be around to do a curve.

It took me about 2 1/2 months to start seeing better numbers.

It wasn't until I found her breakthrough dose that things looked better. For me that was 3 units.

Hi Pam,
I'm a little into month 3 and the numbers have (mostly) gotten better about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks ago. A motto I have to repeat to myself sometimes, learned here, "it is a marathon, not a sprint". Every cat is different (ECID) and this forum proves that further. You may want to try the dose increase when you can monitor, like Janet was saying. Come over to the ProZinc thread and ask too

I started him on 3U last night (Friday). His vet emailed and said she thought this would be better than changing the Budesonide. I am monitoring his BG at +3 and +6. I will continue to do this today and tomorrow. Is 2 1/2 days a long enough time period to see whether or not he will go hypo?

Because of his feeding schedule, I feel like I won't ever get him low enough.

I am updating his SS as I go.
