Yesterday...

I left the conference early and drove home, got here in time for a +8, which was 149. Still haven't slept. Just got the AMPS and it's 92. I'm waiting 15-20 minutes, then retesting with both meters. I'll probably feed, then shoot at +1 if his BG shows a food spike, then monitor. Not sure where sleep comes in.

Just noticed that he's limping... this is really weird. Retesting now.

91 (same number). 138 on the AT2. He's eating now, no shot. I'm going to retest in 30, then test at +1. Trying to get him to walk so I can see which limb he's not putting weight on.

We have a 4 PM appt. Still not sure what to do about his insulin. I haven't slept since I got up yesterday morning. If I sleep, I can't monitor until the meds wear off (4 hours). Does this make sense?

Test 1 hr after he ate (already rising at +0.5)
Feed half a can of 8% or 13% (he usually eats 4%) and give insulin
Sleep for 4 hours
Wake up, get a +4, feed the rest of the can?

The +8 would be at 4 PM.

Adrian, you really don't want to shoot a food influenced number. Can you wait 2 hours from the time you fed and then work your way back on schedule?

Oh, poor Chino (and poor you with the no-sleep situation). I can't really offer advice on the plan :(, the situation is way out of my league. Just wanted to offer sympathy and support-- hope the limping is nothing serious, and the shockingly low numbers today are just the start of something good!

4 hours of sleep is better than nothing... and if I eat anything, I have to wait 2 hours, so sleep has to happen sooner rather than later. I'm going to stay up to get a +2 to make sure he's not still dropping, maybe give some more LC, then go to bed for however long I can go on one dose, then wake up and take him to the vet after getting another BG reading.

That was my second thought so you can get caught up on some sleep, breath and get started at PMPS.

Thanks. I started to think: If it's high enough at +2... but there is NO WAY I'm going to give his PM shot at 9 pm and still be able to get a +4.

hope the limping is nothing serious, and the shockingly low numbers today are just the start of something good!

Thank you. I hope so, too! He's been on the methimazole for 11 days (this is day 12) and it's supposed to bring his T4 into normal range in 2-3 weeks, so I hope this just means that there's one less thing contributing to the insulin resistance.

I woke up 2 hours after going to bed, thought I'd overslept and was late for work AND missed Chino's BG check/insulin... after a few scary minutes, I remembered skipping the dose for a reason and that I still have PTO today.

On the way out the door, I grabbed a towel to put under the carrier. Here's the thing: Chino is not a one-towel cat. When I let him out of the carrier, his back leg was soaking wet and there was nothing left for a UA. He saw the vet that didn't want to go above 2.5 units when we first moved here. The vet said the urinating outside of the litterbox might be from stress and related to the amount he's drinking with his blood sugar higher than usual. He thought I'd be seeing several small puddles instead of a big one in the case of a UTI.

There was a little growth on Chino's right paw that has been there for months, but it got snagged on something and there was a little tear. He cut it off and set Chino on the floor, and the limp was practically gone. I'll be giving him an antibiotic once a day (another pill... won't Chino be happy) that will keep it from getting infected and treat any UTI he might have.

He has also lost some weight. He's down from 11.2 to 10.8 lbs.

Sorry about Chino's accident. I've invested in puppy pads for Doodles carrier and my car seat. I'm no expert on UTI's but have been told the same thing...watch for pebble like peeing in the box. At the beginning of Doodles diabetes he was urinating outside the box but also had neuropathy so struggled getting around. I once had 5 litter boxes in the house so he wouldn't have to go far and all had low sides so he could get in/out easier. If Chino is limping maybe it's just a struggle for him to get in there?

I am glad you got the foot problem dealt with. I hope Chino is walking better now. Pee pads in the carrier are essential here.

The nice thing about skipping this morning is that you can shoot a little early tonight if it helps you get more sleep.

If he keeps dropping 100 points every 2 hours, he might see blue or green again tonight. I've only given small freeze-dried treats, though I have half a can of FF in the refrigerator. Wish I could give him some MC now and go to bed, but I need to know where this dose is taking him.

219. So I'm pretty sure he's not going to have a green nadir. Having a blue cell on the spreadsheet would be nice, but I need to be able to function in the morning, so I'm giving him half a can of FF 4% and going to bed.

Sorry to hear about Chino's paw paw. Glad the vet took care of it and hope he starts feeling better soon. Adrian, I hope you are finally rested now by the time you read this. You've had a tough run buddy. Here's a big :bighug:! Hang in there!
