eating problems

My Merlin has been going through a non- eating period.By that I mean he seems to WANT to eat,just not what I have to give him.I give him Cerenia when this starts and also 1/8 tab. Of 15 mg. Mirtazapine.Still I go through can after can of cat food( this A.M. 4 so far) just to get him to eat a few bites.This plays havoc with his blood glucose levels,as you can imagine.Last night at 9:00 P.M. It was 221,so I gave him a unit of insulin.
This A.M. at 9:00 it was 61!!!!! No insulin this A.M.All these swings can't be good for him ,any advice.
I usually feed Fancy Feast Classic,but since he's been on this food snubbing trip I've tried different foods (31,at last count) I know it's not good to introduce new foods too quickly,but I can't get him eating!
 
Can't say if the science is real but I've always heard cats won't eat what they cannot smell. Noah always caves for stinky fish, not "good" for him but at least he eats. You've tried 31 kinds and aren't a newbie, I don't know what else to say that would be of help. Whiskas Temptations are always a stimulant here but less than 1 calorie each. Swings are only fun for kids.

I just opened a can of Pure Fancy Feast tuna ans shrimp and he went WILD for about two minutes ,he ate about a fourth of it.Maybe I'll calm down and let him eat when he wants,if it takes all day.I hate to syringe feed him which both of us HATE! Liked the swing quote

Has he had a dental lately? It might be worth it to have his teeth checked.

Thanks for the appetite paper.I've tried some but not others so it's good to know.The Vet says his teeth are in great shape. Lately I've noticed he throws his head back when he's swallowing his food,Kind of like when a person is swallowing pills, I think I may take him in and have them look at his throat.
 
They do that for the sole purpose of making you go bonkers! Sometimes I give Noah's tail a little tug and move his dish 3 inches to the left and he scarfs it down.

My cats all graze. None of them eat a lot in a sitting.

Wonder what would happen if you moved it to the right?
 
I've given food a quick zap in the microwave and that makes it more stinky. Also put bits of Whiskas Temptations into the food. Noah is the old man in the house and likes to eat alone, if someone else comes near him he just walks away. So many intangibles, I wish he could talk.

I just tried the Temptations today,He ate around the food to get to the treat,BRAT! So I broke pieces of it up,but then he wasn't interested.Wait,here he comes again maybe I can get him going THIS time.If my Dad( who was a farm boy and felt cats didn't need a lot of fuss) could see me now,holding up,spoons full of cat food to Merlin,he'd walk away muttering!

before becoming diabetic, was he eating wet or dry? If it's because he likes dry better, you could get a bag of Evo.

Mostly wet,with dry left out at night . I do the same thing now with the dry being Hills Prescrption WD.I got some new kinds of food to see if I could interest him,and today he ate about a 1/4 can of Purina grain free fish.I'm afraid to give him too much fish as I'm afraid he'll develop taste for only fish,but right now I'm feeling like if he eats it that's all I care about!

yeah honestly when they are off of food, eating anything is better than nothing. Maybe sprinkle some cheese on the food... or add pieces of deli meats or chicken to entice him. has he been checked for pancreatitis? That's the only time my boy Zimmy didn't want to eat. Has he always been a picky eater?
 
Also try raising the food bowl up. Put it on a book or something. If he has acid reflux, bending down could make eating uncomfortable. With it raised it's in a more nuetral position.

Yes he does have Pancreatis.I gave him a shot of Pepcid,a pain shot,a Cerina and an appetite stimulus. I

I know ,I spend more time trying to entice Merlin to eat then I do eating myself! I don't know how he managed before we became best pals and he was feral!
