Happy Sunday all. Can't believe the pen won't even last a week as it is and looks like I need to increase by 4 or 5u? I need to go the the doc and throw some sugar in my bloodwork to get dx with diabetes to get covered for Levemir!

I believe you found larger needles. It has been mentioned here that splitting the dose into 2 injections/needles might improve the absorption. Makes sense in my simple mind but then you're sticking Bronx with an additional needle :( Hope he's feeling good!

Yes, got 50u syringes. Never heard that splitting it in 2 helps absorption, but at his rate it will be 2 50u syringes by next month!

ECID but 30u in one needle versus 32u in two needles (one on each shoulder) didn't have much effect on Jacks numbers.

Thank goodness for Marks marine, getting 5 pens for less then the price of 2 in the US is a huge savings. Even then it is depressing watching those pens fly by.

Today is the 6th cycle at 35u and that only got him to 136, looks like another dosecrease soon to me. It is encouraging seeing more blues, he is getting closer to a good dose.

When you are on high dose wouldn't it make more financial sense to buy the vials? I know it doesn't for a regular kitty because we wouldn't get through the insulin before it went off, but for high dose kitties might you get more insulin for your money this way?

Just asking the question, I'm not familiar with the pricing in the US, but here in spain it would make more financial sense to do it that way.

I'll have to look into that. I just see everyone else use the pens, even high dose cats like Jack @saltycat, so I figured it was the most economical choice?

Marks marine doesn't show they offer Lev in the vials, I never asked the pharmacist directly. For Lantus the price per unit is the same for the vial vs the pens, so I kind of assumed it would be the same for Lev.

US insulin prices are crazy Walgreens wants almost $600 for a box of Lev pens, I got 4 boxes from Marks for a little over $750.

It's probably just different over here, it was lantus though that worked out cheaper per unit in the vials than the pens.
Lantus wasn't expensive here in spain about 70 dollars for 5 pens.

In Canada (and Mark's is a 25 minute drive away from me), I think the cost per unit of insulin is the same for pens/cartridges as it is for vials. I switched to cartridges just for the convenince factor. And eventually Neko got to a dose that made it more economical.

Good luck with the increase. I'd love to see some lower blues and the odd green on Bronx's SS. I found that I needed to get the nadirs lower in order to reduce the height of the bounces. Your call whether you want to do the 4 or 5 unit increase.

PS: I love that Bronx went two days with nothing higher than yellow. Getting him to spend as much time as possible below renal threshold should be a goal.

Thanks, yes we had a good run! What is wrong staying in the low blues below the renal threshold for an acrobean like Bronx? It's not like he's on his way to remission. I would love to see a green but then I couldn't use R which will result in a quick bounce back to pinks I would think.

The problem is that it's really hard to keep a kitty in just blues. Cat's cycles are much flatter when they are seeing some greens. It can still be high greens. With Neko, I had to keep her nadirs in the 70's, or her bounces would be above renal threshold. That was became even more of a concern to me when her CKD was diagnosed. Kidney problems are common with acros and I wanted to take it as easy as I could on them. The internal medicine vets at Coloradu State University (where she had her SRT), told me the best thing I could do for her was maximize her time under renal threshold.

You'll hear some people elsewhere say that the acro blues are their greens, but I don't believe it. From what I've seen, keeping a little green in the SS also seems to help keep down the resistance. If nothing else, it helps prevent glucose toxicity from developing, which means an even higher dose.

If Bronx sees green, he would bounce the first time or maybe even the first several times, but he would get used to it eventually. Forcing Neko to "see the green" is what helped lower the height of her bounces.
