Sorry to be late in replying. I got @Red & Rover (GA) & "Cat" 's tag, but I wasn't on the board very long last night and then it was too late (for a senior citizen) to stay up . I'm glad that the pj party went well. Thank you Elise, and SqualliesMom for being there for Sarah.
One thing I noticed on Samba's SS is that you gave a possible fur shot on Feb. 14 (A.M.). The next day at PMPS you raised Samba's dose from 2.25U to 2.50U. I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that when you give a fur shot, or skip a shot, you have to start counting cycles all over again. Probably the increase to 2.5U was too much in that situation and precipitated the steep drop. I'm glad you took the reduction back to 2.25U. It may take a few days for Samba's numbers to settle down.

Good job last night!

I think one of the hardest parts for me is knowing how many cycles to count, so this info is extremely helpful...thank you! Another time I raised the dose, I was told I shouldn't have because he was "breaking a bounce". Some of this stuff still really confuses me. Moving forward, I know I'm supposed to go back to the last "good dose" if the reduction fails, but does that not apply here because I raised the dose too soon?

Also, it sounds like I can expect him to bounce now after last night's shenanigans, so do high numbers mean that the reduction failed or do I disregard them and label them as a bounce and wait till it breaks before judging whether the reduction was successful or not?

Finally, I guess the last "good dose" probably wasn't 2.5 anyway, so I am just totally confused!

I guess I'm just wondering how long to hold this current dose and when would be the appropriate time (if any) to raise it again.

Thanks so much. Samba is happy and grooming & purring like crazy today after all his treats last night :)

Nice to see a blue preshot. Don't be surprised to see a bounce after all that hc. Great job last night. You really didn't even need me!:):D
Thanks for helping me out last night, and I wouldn't have known what to do if it wasn't for @Barbara & Uncle and others helping me through his first surf last weekend. Everyone here is so wonderful. Very grateful to have found this forum. I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday so far...it is beautiful here in Maryland

I'll try to answer your questions in order:
#1. I think that 2.25 is the last good dose because you were only on 2.5 for three cycles and it is pretty clear that 2.5 was too much insulin at this time. I would keep Samba's dose at 2.25 for the present, try to get in as many mid-cycle tests as you can, and see how he does. Lantus dosing is based on the nadir (the lowest number of any given cycle). The nadir isn't always at the mid point of the cycle, however. It can move around. You need to get a feel for where Samba goes with his numbers. Which protocol are you following? TR or Go Slow? Read the descriptions in the Stickies for "precise" instructions on when to increase in these two protocols. If you are following TR you are only allowed to feed wet food. I use " " because nothing in Feline Diabetes is absolute. You really have to go with your gut and your knowledge of your cat.
#2. He will almost certainly bounce because his body is not used to those low numbers. Sometimes the bounce is immediate, sometimes it is delayed for a cycle or two. How long it takes to "break" a bounce is different for every cat.

So hang in there, keep good notes in your spreadsheet, and try to get those mid-cycle tests in when possible for your schedule. Aside from AMPS and PMPS you don't have to test at the same times every cycle. It is better to have a range of tests, so, for example, if you can test at +4 one day, you might be able to test at +7 the next day. These data are all useful.

Anyway, you are doing very well and you are getting to know your cat. As someone once said, the only thing predictable about Feline Diabetes is that it is unpredictable!

Have a good weekend and keep on asking questions. There are no bad questions!
