hi everyone,

First I want to say THANK YOU for having this web page and forums. Thank you to all those who answered my many and probably silly questions! We are new to diabetes and are in our second week of BGT and treatment with caninsulin. Tribby my kitty is 15 yrs old- ish. She's a rescue.

We discovered that she had diabetes during blood work testing to see what was causing her chronic diarhhea on and off since early last December. She has taken Flagyl, an antibiotic and pancur, a deworming medication twice with a short lasting improvement.

I have tried different foods and OTC medications as well as probiotics. No luck so far. Early on she had irritable bowel symptoms including gas and a noisy tummy. She would also leave small messes where she was laying and would sit hunched leading me to think that she was painful.

Her pancreatic values were normal and her BGL was in the 20's when we started treating her for diabetes. My vet is not sure if the diabetes caused the diarhhea or the other way around. Her BGL is between 6-9 now the IBS symptoms have improved.

After all this medication and treatment she STILL has intermittent diarhhea!

Has anyone else's cat had diarhhea along with diabetes?
Any suggestion on how to treat and / or prevent?

Many people here use plain canned pumpkin to treat both constipation and diarrhea.

I would personally have them check electrolyte levels, as some of these can lead to diarrhea that may wax and wane with insulin and BS levels, especially in older cats that might have early stages of kidney disease. IBS is pretty common, and really the exact cause is unknown, food changes (single protein diets/grain free diets/raw diets) are of some value. I have a cat on steroids with IBS that has done really well. Also, intestinal lymphoma is always a concern in older cats with chronic diarrhea. It's treatable, and responds very well to treatment in many cases.

If you do think it is IBD or IBS and are looking into pred I want to encourage you to look into budesonide and hopefully your vet is familiar with it. It has much fewer side effects and although pred is the gold standard many cats get more complicated issues from using it. We found out the hard way that my civvie Rico had a heart issue when we went on pred for runny stool. He is doing well on the budesonide (compounded).

Shaak did this, she would lay down and when she would get up there would be a medium size lump of diarrhea under her. Once we had her on Insulin for about a week she stopped doing this. I am not sure why she did it except that she was losing the ability to hold her bowels and as she began to feel better the problem cured itself. Now we did also start giving her canned pumpkin, I think that contributed to the diarrhea stopping but I don't think it had much to do with her pooping while laying down. We did not ever give her anything else as far as medicine, natural or otherwise for the problem.

Thanks Cathie! Tribby has a loud fart then almost like turbo poop. It's really smelly too.

Did Shak eat the pumpkin on his own or did you feed with a syringe? How much did he eat at a time?

I'm stopping on my way home to get pumpkin!!

I put a tablespoon of plain pumpkin each meal when one of mine has diarrhea.

One of my cats had a case of it for a few weeks and we realized she has a sensitivity to pork.
