Hi everyone, sorry for posting another question so soon but I need help :(
Maury is urinating in places he never has in the past and not all the time. I know diabetic kitty's can produce more urine, whether they drink lots or little, but I won't be able to sit on my sofa soon! I already have to sleep without him now because he peed in my bed :banghead: a couple weeks ago. So I have to keep the bedroom door closed until this stops.

Before he was occasionally going on the basement floor (since diagnosed), which I kinda wish he went back to that. The floor was a lot easier to clean than sofa cushions. Trying to clean sofa with white vinegar / water solution.

Basically wondering if anyone else has had this experience with their newly diabetic kitty and any suggestions how to deter it from happening. Thanks as always :cat:

I've had lots of cats pee when they're annoyed about something; physical pain, new cat in the house. Often the first symptom of a diabetic cat. We had to get a Mondo Large litter box.

How frustrating. I'd add an extra litterbox or two... Maybe cat attract litter. You'll need a pet specific cleaner for the sofa. My favorite is anti icky poo unscented.

Is that really the name? Wait until it gets into tile grout. We have one of those baby steam cleaners, works great if you get to things in time.
Yong, is this your first diabetic cat? Don't get too freaked out just yet, it's all part of the plan.

I do sympathise. Bertie often sleeps on my pillow, and when he first became diabetic I woke up with my hair soaked in cat's pee more than once... :arghh:

Maury may simply be doing this because his blood glucose is so high. Perhaps his need to pee comes on very suddenly? ....And that will resolve once his blood glucose gets into better numbers.
Or it may be that he has something else going on, such as a urinary tract infection..?
I agree that extra litter boxes or 'cat attract' may help. You might also consider putting 'puppy pads' down on places where Maury seems to like to pee...

It would be great to have more data so we can get a more detailed picture of what's going on with Maury's blood glucose. I know we're seeing high numbers with him at the moment, but I also wonder if there are lower numbers that aren't being caught...
Are you able to do a test prior to each insulin shot? And also some mid-cycle tests? This could provide some really useful info...

Don't lose heart. It's very early days. And there's every chance that things will be getting better for Maury, and for you, very soon. :bighug:

Yes, he is my first diabetic kitty.

Thanks JanetNJ, I'll look at that. I use Nature's miracle for the floor mess but I'm running low.

Eliz, I don't think it's UTI. My last boy had one and Maury isn't showing any of those signs. No blood in urine, not constantly trying to go, etc. I think it may be because is BG is still high and he gets a sudden urge to go now. I just ordered some FS Lite test strips cos the AT2 starter kit only came with 25. Going to try and get another curve tomorrow since it will be day 3 of his 2U dose before I increase him to the Vet's recommended 2.5U.
I'm trying to be patient and hoping my baby boy gets feeling better soon :cat:

Was just curious if anyone else had these experiences and other suggestions to help deter.

Had the same problem with Colin. I put plastic mattress covers on the beds and sofa and plastic table cloths on the chairs until things were under control. I also added extra boxes, one right next to the bed.

That link really made me think. For some reason this topic has been pestering me all day and then I remembered Zazoo, He was the first cat of a young friend and from 1 year of age on he peed on anything plastic or vinyl. In the end the situation became intolerable; my friend was young and could not change her lifestyle to suit the cat, no one would adopt the cat. I'm not being flippant about this because it can make you nearly go mad or dissolve a relationship; your home stinks like pee, vets don't know what to tell you. Still all I can offer is that something is annoying Maury, the litter box is too far away or too hard to climb in to, it's the wrong kind of litter. We had a 28 pound cat that required us to buy a huge Post Office bin and cut a big entrance in the side with a jigsaw. When he became arthritic I built a landing for the box 1/2 way down the basement stairs. When we had 9 cats we used to use discount litter from the super market. They all seemed to be happier when we switched to a better litter and in the end it was cheaper than the cheap stuff because we didn't get clumps as big as a cabbage.
Don't give up. Maury is not doing this to annoy you.

Crap, forgot something. In the link below the question is asked "Can a cat be depressed?" If we put so much value on their lives isn't it ridiculous to think cats cannot be happy or sad? Everyone talks about looking into a dogs eyes but cats get left out. Maybe it's not so obvious with a cat but I know it's there. Just like no one wants to poop their pants at the mall, what cat wants to pee outside his box, where he lives, without a reason? Again, not an answer but something to think about. I think I'm done now.
Erratic litter box behavior & depressed?

Thanks everyone :)
Most of the reasons listed were ones I have thought about or I am aware of. I'm going to get out his extra litter box and set it up on the main floor for him. I think I de-crypted his kitty-coded message out ;). Just wanted to see if anyone else experienced this with their diabetic kitty, if it stopped once kitty became more regulated, and extra ideas.
Noah, I know he's not doing it to annoy me and I am not mad at him by any means. :cat:I know he is not feeling well, yet. And I agree that cats are overlooked when it comes to "sad puppy eyes" because I have definitely seen "sad kitty eyes".

We never had an issue with my diabetic cat going out of the box. We have a litter box on all three levels of the house. My ckd cat however has been a pain for years. Our compromise is that we put puppy training pads outside of the boxes and he will usually use that to pee.... But it's better than the floor. He thankfully always poops in the box.
