Morning all,

There we are, FINALLY Friday !! Week has been quite busy on the cat and life side
as well and today is time to give myself a little gift. There as been a major gift
on the table since more than a week, Anna if a gift from heaven, love her so much.
We're talking everyday through the air and on the phone, special feeling.
She'll be alone tonight as I'm going to a show downtown. There will be a
''Commemorating ACDC'' show. Hope the sound will break up the place, love
this group like mad. Sent a mail to my beer buddy yesterday, hope we'll have
some fun.

On the kitty's side, I got ketone strips yesterday at the 4th drug store I went to.
Thing is that I'm just afraid to test.... if ketone is on the rise or still high, backup
plans are scarce. The is potassium that can kill ketone but I've no dosing or anything.
Small Kitty is eating well, he's fatty and doesn't throw away, good sign.

Will need to test ketone this week-end and increase (Small Kitty is due).
Hope it's gonna turn neg.

Good day everybody, time to speed up.

I would go ahead and test for ketones, anyway, Sebasbtien. Ketones can build to dangerous levels in a matter of hours. I don't know what it's like where you live, but where I live vets are only open half day on Saturdays and not open on Sundays. I think the sooner you know his ketone level the better.
I hope you really enjoy the show with your buddy tonight. It sounds like fun.

It sounds like you need to stay on top of testing for ketones. I hope you get good results. I hope SK keeps surfing safely for you today. Have fun tonight.

Nice yellow this morning Small Kitty! Sending vines for no ketones!!! :bighug::bighug:

I hope you have fun tonight. It is always a nice feeling to get out and hear some live music.

I am so happy you have found love Sébastien. You deserve it. :)

Problem that if what I'm facing is ER, it's just a death sentence, I simply cannot afford
anything heavy at the moment. I'll check it out tonight, fluid will have had done it's job
if it has to work.

Hope it will be negative...

I understand the fear, Sébastien. My cat had DKA and the switch to Lantus had me very worried because that's what he was on when it happened. I didn't know anything about proper dosing then though.

Go ahead and test SK with the strip. The fear is worse than the knowing/dealing it. He might give you a nice surprise.

It is best to know. The knowledge might $ave you a trip to the emergency vet in the middle of the night. That is something that is not "done dirt cheap."

Have a great time at the show. Hope the tribute band puts on as great a show as the original band does/did. (Saw them in Toronto years back.)

I will know tonight but I think he's fine.

He's :
Eating like mad
Far from being thin or losing weight
Running and fighting with his brother (good strength)
Purring (not depress)
No UTI (tested)
No ketone detected in urine
Is able to reach low GL
No fruity smell breath
Skin is not loose

If I start stressing up during the week at the office I might do epilepsy
seizure and they will call ER. Will be better ''digesting'' bad news (if at all)
at home with no stress of having to call sick or go to the office stressed up.

My girlfriend and myself are praying right now, hope we'll turn the tide if needed.

Lots of vines for small kitty. Knowing is the hardest, but most important thing. If he does start throwing ketones, the earlier you catch it the better. Even if all you can do is treat it from home, there are options that could help prevent it from turning into full blown DKA. Ketones are the warning sign, and not the same as DKA. If you don't have fluids, I've heard of others who have been able to get a script to pick them up at a drug store. My vet was nice enough to give me a subq fluid bag and needles, cost was under $40 for the whole kit including spare needles.

I don't have experience with ketones, but many others on the boards do and can lend a hand in things that can help flush out the ketones to help prevent an emergency.

Hang in there, get through today and do what you can... :bighug:

Small Kitty has been on fluid since detection (3 days). Hope it will ''flush'' out any acid standing by. I've been
able to get a leave early from the office. Will go straight home to test and go to the vet asking for an ''at home''
solution. Think there is electrolyte and other things you can administer. This vet is very opportunist, hope he
will not propose a 20k plan...
.

Glad to hear he is getting some fluids and you are doing your best to stay ahead of the ketones. I understand the vet has to make a living too, so I try to compromise a bit, and my vet has been pretty good. I can't imagine how many curves we would have done at $150 each if I had not learned to home test. Hopefully your vet will be understanding in your situation, and will err on helping someone and their beloved pet, over a few extra dollars... paws crossed you get some affordable help from the vet.

I think the members here are the exception to most of the vets clients, we have the desire, knowledge and support to do a lot of things at home that most people would let the vet do for $$$.

Try not to imagine the worst, Sèbastian. From your description, it sounds like it's unlikely that SK still has ketones present. You are doing the best things to prevent/get rid of them. Let's all think good, non-ketone thoughts.

Now no panic, the 911 is to get quick advice, Small Kitty is still alive and feeling good.

Here is the situation :

Ketone testing proved the level has risen almost by twice in 3 days.

Typical is 0.3 was 2.7 and now 5.7

Plan :
Going to vet at 7h30pm
Blood test will be made (what kind ????)

Question :
What to ask not to blow up my wallet ?
.

What to ask not to blow up my wallet ?
Ask: How can I treat this at home? More sub-q fluids, etc.? He needs to be checked for infection, because infection somewhere in the body is usually part of the cause. He will probably need anti-biotics if infection is found. You also need to be sure he's getting enough calories.

Thanks for the reply,

He's getting plenty of calories, 2.5 cans of LC per day (100 cal each) .. I know there is no UTI, test strips did not show
any blood in the urine.

Hope he will not ask for doubling the insulin dose...

Have teeth checked - infection there possible? Just throwing out suggestions.

Be up front with the vet. See if they can work out payment plan.

Prayers and vines Sébastien. :bighug:

Hey Sebastien, I dealt with Bubba's Ketones at 5.5 on the ketone meter at home I put about 1/8 cup of water in all his meals ( yes, it looked soupy) and kept testing. As long as he is eating and doesn't seem sick, the ketones can come and go and you can flush them. Get a test tomorrow AM so if you need the vet you can get there before they close . Don't know about in CA but here most are opened until 12 noon on Sats. Keeping good thought for you and SK

I'm there right now. ketone in urine...

no plan so far

Oufff, what a night...

The vet visit was far from being a luxury, there has been quite a few things that
needed to be addressed. UTI that was neg is not pos, blood in urine. Ketone that
was neg this week is not pos, traces. The vet that I knew what I was looking for and
explained things like an adult and not as if he was talking to a kid.

Blood work is amazingly fine, everything in range but glucose. Performed a Ketone
test while there and it dropped, 4.7, don't know why it dropped. Infection came out of nowhere
and is the reason for all that mess. Teeth that were supposedly set are not, there is
infection around the back teeth will need to brush now on, tartar was removed but
gingivitis has been undetected causing infection.

Now need to subq at yet to be defined interval a total of 400ml a day. Vet said
he's dehydrited (urine is almost withe). Got antibiotic for 2 weeks. Duration of
subq is vague... Have 2 ''thanks'', one with sodium and the other without, will need
to alternate in between.

That's the war plan, hope we'll kill the enemy with this strategy. Small Kitty has
been very nice while there, very quiet. Was lucky to have my friend Dominic to
carry me out there.

Need to go sleep, quite tired with all that.

Thanks for being there my friends, you're the best !

Sébastien

Thanks for your support.

Good that you have a plan.

400 ml is a lot of fluid to be given over the course of a day. If you can break it up into 4x100.

Look after yourself as well. Sorry you missed ACDC trib band.

:bighug::bighug::bighug:happy to hear a positive update with a plan... come on SK time to put on those small boxing gloves and start kicking butt on that infection :bighug::bighug::bighug:more prayers sent
