My 13th year old male cat "Coal" has diabetes for 1 year. He is on Lantis for 1 year at a high dosage.

In the past two months, he seems to just want to eat and eat. He just doesn't stop wanting food and seems like he can not remember when he last ate. Almost like loosing his memory.

He is also peeing a lot.

He is a cute cat but now seems :

A) out of energy. Won't respond to toys inc laser pointer. He used to chase them
B) just wants to eat (though on diet as per our vet)
C) is just not sure what is going on. Seems like he forgets
D) low energy. Used to wander, jump up, run around. Now it's eat or sleep.

Has anyone seen this in their cat. Side effects of lantis? Should I get more opinions from vet?

Honestly do not know what to do !

Are you home testing? What are the numbers? He could be extremely low or extremely high....

Cats can go into remission.... Doses need to be adjusted. Blindly shooting without testing first is really dangerous.

The behaviour and symptoms you are describing sounds like his BG might be high. Though there are other things that could cause them.

You say he is on a high dose, how much lantus is he getting?
Has he been tested for a high dose condition?(IAA, acro)
Do you test his BG at at home?
What diet has the vet recommended?
If you have any readings of his BG it would really help us to know what they are.

How high is Coal's dose? How did he get to that dose?

One in four diabetic cats have a condition called acromegaly. It is caused by a benign pituitary tumour that send out excess growth hormone. Symptoms are extreme hunger, lethargy, and weight gain in spite of not having controlled blood sugar.

My cat has those same exact symptoms and is also on a high dose of insulin. It was suggested here that I get him tested for IAA/Acromegaly after we hit the 6u shot every 12hours. I had the tests done and sure enough he was diagnosed with Acromegaly, but at least negative for IAA.
