A popular fibre-based treatment which is available OTC in the USA is psyllium. You only need to give a tiny amount - the maximum dose is 1/8th of a teaspoon, but you should start with an even smaller dose. With fibre-based treatments, it is very important to ensure that the cat drinks plenty of water, otherwise the fibre can bulk up in the body and make the constipation worse.

In the USA psyllium is commonly sold under the name of Metamucil, however, be sure not to buy Metamucil Clear and Natural (blue container) because this does not contain psyllium.

If you are in the UK, your vet may offer you a standardised pharmaceutical-grade fibre called Nutrifyba.

Too much fibre may prevent your cat from absorbing sufficient nutrients or calories from his/her food. In humans, fibre may also bind calcium in the small intestine and lead to an increase in calcium levels in the body(hypercalcaemia). If you are only giving a small amount to prevent constipation, your cat will probably be fine, but be careful if your cat already has hypercalcaemia.
 
Tricia emailed me that you could use info on clay for diarrhea and what we did with Shadow when she had this issue.

My Shadow had a severe bout of diarrhea which is when the vet suspected ibd which untreated will usually become lymphoma.
The first medication that was added was metronidazole. I did not give it long enough expecting it to stop the diarrhea quickly,
the vet did not communicate that it can take a while. You will likely want to get the three medications that have ***.
She also gave me clay to add that helps to thicken things up.
Budesonide for the inflammation which later we switched to prednisolone.

the other three drugs were for appy issues which often accompany diarrhea issues ....

***Budesonide 1 mg 1 x day
Cerenia 5mg every other day ( pills, not shots)
****Clay 1/8 tsp 2x a day
ondansetron up to 2x a day
cyproheptadine up to 2x a day
****metronidazole 75 mg 2x a day


It took a few weeks to work.... ( which is frustrating)
but it did stop.

I think it was a reaction to one of the ingredients in most canned food.
It's hard to figure out exactly what but once there is an irritant present, inflammation starts in the intestinal lining and you have to
play catch up....
which usually does mean prednisolone ultimately.


Shadow didn't like the clay added to her food so I got empty capsules and would pill her with it instead.

I've got her on Cerenia and Ondansetron, she's supposed to have Metronidazole daily but it makes her vomit after about a week. Then she can't eat and has so much pain.
 
i'm answering you here about the clay.

there is more than one type. The bentonite is one of them so yes... you could use that.....
but when I went to look up clays for feline diarrhea , I found this great link.

it mentions more things to try...
and even mentions kaopetate... I'd call the vet first to double check that it's okay.... but I remember that product....
didn't know it was related to the clay.
