? Homemade food?

Hi Lace, I feed Rocky raw homemade food but we live in the UK and our meat in supermarkets is of high quality.
I usually buy minced turkey thigh, beef (medium fat) and lamb and mix with it best free range very fresh eggs, egg shell powder (make my own) with a little ACV (apple cider vinegar), some organic Italian herbs, vit E, taurine powder and organic spirulina.
I used to add vitamin B complex and fish oils but Rocky seems to be allergic to fish and he has too much B12 in his blood so I don't use these any more. Rocky gets some wild meats and game and I always give him kidneys, a bit of liver and hearts from wild birds (my husband goes hunting). I used to give Rocky chicken wings to chew and it was brilliant but I had to stop as he had some teeth removed so he doesn't chew chicken very well and swallows pieces and then throws up.

I have made home made (raw) for two kitties, one diabetic and kidney disease, the other with IBD. I have occasionally done it with cooked food do. I have been using premixes, either TC Feline Special or EZComplete by FoodFurLife. There is a long thread in the Think Tank forum on making your own food for kidney cats with links to premix vendors and recipes for making your own food. Dr. Lisa also has a page on making your own food on http://www.catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood

Wendy, which premix do you prefer and why?

I started out with TC Feline Special first doing raw just for Neko. The civie does not have CKD (antijinx). I chose it because it's made fairly close to me and I know someone else who uses it successfully. Then I wanted to try using a premix I could use for both that is low phosphorus but without a binder. TC Feline has calcium carbonate in it. So I tried making the EZComplete for both. That worked for a while, until Neko went off raw. The nice thing about EZComplete is that I could also use it with cooked meat. I'm still using it, I ordered a large package last time. The other thing I like about it is that it was created by people who have IBD kitties. And it's very simple, just add distilled water and the premix to meat and mix. I did try a sample of the TC Feline with the IBD cat, but he threw it up. Not sure if it was the premix or just the point in time when he was still vomiting because we didn't have the right med mix for his IBD. I'll probably stick with EZComplete for him - I don't like to rock the boat food wise.

Another thing to note, the TC Feline available in the US is made slightly differently than the one I get in Canada. The regular TC Feline in the US has gums in it, whereas the Canadian version does not. I try to avoid gums with ibd cats.

I remember looking into TC Feline mix but after I saw it contained flax seed meal (for Omega 3) I decided not to use it as cats can not utilise flax seed and Omega 3 source should be of animal origin. Have to look into it again, maybe something has changed.
if not I would like to use a mix without flax seed meal. Does anyone know a product like that?

Hi Marlena....would be interested in hearing what u find out. I am in the homemade food info gathering stage right now so I can make best choice for Elmo( diabetic, hyperthyroid, slight kidney ) and my civvies Ben and Chris ( were on Science Diet cd for urinary but now switched to Wellness Core Beef and Venison). Just really want them all off commercial canned food but want to make right homemade choice .

The TC Feline made in Canada does not contain flax seed meal. Don't know about the product made in Germany or the US.

Other premix's you can get that are low carb that I know of are Alnutrin and EZComplete.

Thank you guys, still no time to look into it but you have given me some information so it looks good.
