Last week I said I would update how this was working. Noah has severe dental issues, surgery not an option, too long of a story, HATED getting it orally. Tried different flavours, everything. The injectable with syringe too hard to get in Canada.
CONTINUED SUCCESS So easy to do. Pre-loaded syringe, consistency of toothpaste, rub on inside of ear. No issues with irritation, pawing or scratching, other cats sniffing. A happier cat makes me happier.

I'm interested to hear that you thought it worked - good to know
My vet said that there has been no studies to show that bupe is absorbed from the transdermal route and cautioned against it for that reason

I would expect transdermal bupe to work since bupe, like Fentanyl, is a synthetic opioid and Fentanyl patches have been used in the vet field for many years.
Transdermal be should also be fine since bupe has very large margin for overdosing and not getting enough absorbed would not be much of a concern as compared with not getting enough transdermal antibiotic.

I've heard US Forces use Lolipop Fentanyl if you're facing a long helicopter ride etc. Never worked for me, opioids keep me awake, what a nightmare! I cracked 3 vertebrae and it was 39 days before I slept 8 hours straight. Around midnight when I couldn't take the pain I'd take 2 Percocets and that meant an all-nighter in front of the TV. "May cause drowsiness" yeah, I wish. How did I crack my back? I wish I could say I ran across the freeway to save a puppy or pull a family from a burning car but actually I fell in the shower. That really made me feel old! Sssh, don't tell anyone.

One more. I always liked that tee-shirt "Question Authority", or better yet "Accepted Wisdom". We had a cat who needed a spinal tap, something my trusted vet could not do. I've heard these are incredibly painful for humans. New vet says "No, not painful for cats" but were both mammals and pain is pain. When I pressed the issue she just looked down at her shoes and mumbled something like "Because I said so". We've all seen cats and dogs that don't start howling or crying until it really REALLY hurts. Do they teach compassion anymore or was that course discontinued?

I am posting this reply in the misc thread in the Community section. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...on-and-narcotics-amongst-other-things.171507/ Thought it might give us a chance to blow off some stress.
