Hi folks,
I'm updating the UK food list, and wondered if there are any foods that you'd like me to add?

I've updated the Granatapet, Lily's Kitchen, Hi Life, and Thrive sections so far (I think....).

Let me know if there's something specific you'd like added/updated.

Thanks,

Eliz

Hey, Eliz! :cat:

New Year's blessings to you. :bighug:

Catz Finefood have a new range of monoprotein foods available at zooplus which might be worth adding. The range is Purrr (Sophie - @Capoo - let me know about them.)

If I think of any more I'll post again.

Hi @Elizabeth and Bertie ,

I think that there is a new flavor from Terra Faelis that is convenient in terms of carbs : Salmon. It's only available in cans of 200 grams, where the others are available in cans of 400 grams.

Does the Whiskas "oh so" range still exist? I was looking today and couldn't see it. I need to get Sky off Felix AGAIL and she is refusing to eat her Applaws pate now.

I have some Purrr on the list but the range has changed, I think; and there are pouches now also... So I will update. Thanks for the suggestion. :cat:

Eliz

Hi Sophie,

Thanks for that suggestion.
I can't find the salmon Terra Faelis listed in the UK at the moment. But a thought occurs... ...At the moment I don't think any of us are listing foods available in Europe (that aren't available in the UK) and that seems to be something of an omission... ...So, how about I list some European foods in a separate section at the end of the UK list....? Or something like that.... Am open to suggestions. Let me know what you think, Sophie.

Hugs,

Eliz

Hiya,
It seems the 'Oh So' range has been discontinued (it's not on the Whiskas website). But some flavours are still available in some places online, I notice, if you want to stock up....

...Why do you need to get Sky off Felix AGAIL..?

Hello lovely ladies!
Best wishes of health and happiness for you and all of your loved ones for 2017!
I have been buying recently Natures:menu COUNTRY HUNTER superfood selection.
I think it is rather good.

Sending love

BTW Eliz, if you're planning to highlight questionable ingredients in foods it might be worth flagging those with additives not suitable for CKD cats, notably those with ingredients of dandelion (diuretic) and cranberry (acidifying).

Hi Eliz,

That's a really good idea!

I think that a lot of us, European people I mean, order from Zooplus.
This website has local websites in each European country, but I have found that the German one is the most expanded version, with a lot of brands and varieties only available here. ( By the way, everybody from any European country can order directly from the German website, it's cheaper, you just need to speak a little bit of German ).

Ideally, it would be good to list all the foods available on the German website, but it will be an endless list.
My main concern is that sometimes, the composition indicated on the website doesn't match with the one written on the label.

If you need me to do anything, just let me know!

...Why do you need to get Sky off Felix AGAIL..?
.

She has eaten it since she came to live with us.. When she was diagnosed i checked and it did seem to be low carb but i did want to get her on a better quality so switched to Applaws. She loved this for a while and her numbers really dropped. Sometimes she did get Felix and her numbers immediately increased, dropping again when she went back to Applaws. She has refused to eat her applaws recently so has been on AGAIL and her numbers are high.

It may be a coincidence.......

I did notice on one of the posts that vegetable protein extracts can cause spikes - AGAIL lists that as an ingredient.

I checked with Whiskas and it is discontinued as not as popular as it was - had a really nice email from them:

Dear Karen,

Thanks for getting in touch with Whiskas.

I'm sorry to tell you that we no longer make the Whiskas "Oh So" range. After seeing a drop in popularity and sales we've decided to focus on other products.

The use of sugar in our Whiskas pet foods is not harmful to pets. When used in wet foods, sugar is added in tiny amounts in the form of caramel or burnt sugar as a natural colourant.
In some of our care and treats, sugar is added in very small amounts in snacks and treats (less than a few grams) and is used to help maintain shelf life of the product.

Cat health and happiness is incredibly important to us and we put a lot of effort into making sure our products are safe and nutritious for cats. We don't add sugars for nutritional purposes, the sugars come from the natural ingredients we use.

However, in our Sheba range we don't add any sugar and the ‘various sugars' listed on the packaging come from the natural ingredients we use.

I hope that you find something suitable for your cat and if you need any more information, please let me know.

Kind regards.

Found some Sheba fine flakes now from tesco - she has been on that for 24 hours and her blood test tonight is the lowest its been in a while. i won't count any chickens until it's a regular low number though. I have all fingers crossed :)

Thanks for all the work you do on the food list - it's truly invaluable!

Felix AGAIL has raised blood glucose in a number of cats, but some are completely unaffected... I think the 'vegetable protein extract' is usually made from soya, so it's possible that it's a soya intolerance that causes the high numbers, but, that's just a guess....
It certainly spikes Bertie's blood glucose, and I always keep a few pouches in my hypo kit for emergencies!
And there was a cat in remission here a few years back whose blood glucose jumped to 31 after once pouch of AGAIL.... Fortunately it did come back down again...
It was for this reason that I didn't put the food on this UK list... But, on reflection, maybe that was a mistake... Perhaps it would be better to list the food, but with a warning that it has raised BG in some cats.... Hmmm....

Oooh, nice!
Keeping fingers and paws crossed for continued low numbers... :bighug:

I initially wondered if it was the "various sugars" in AGAIL that had caused the increase in numbers so was trying to avoid those cat foods. Lilys Kitchen also seemed to cause an increase.

Food is a minefield and if I ever have kittens I will get them straight onto a good quality food :)

Okey dokey, Mogs. Will look into that.
Are there some in particular that you've already noticed have these ingredients? If so I'll add that info in.

Sophie, I've created a little section at the bottom of the current UK food list where we can start adding European foods (that aren't directly available in UK). Can you suggest maybe 12 - 15 foods to start out with?
.
My main concern is that sometimes, the composition indicated on the website doesn't match with the one written on the label.
That certainly can be a problem...
Where possible I can get the data from the manufacturer's website...? (But even manufacturers get it wrong sometimes... )

Please can you put AGAIL in the list please? That's what mine eat and seem to be doing ok.

Has anyone in the UK come across/fed any of the Encore range of foods? I am always trying to wean my Sapphire off Whiskas but she doesn't like the dearer alternatives! One of the local cat rescues I support say their kitties go mad for Encore - I'd be interested to hear any experiences. I don't think it's on the list @Elizabeth and Bertie ?

I'm fairly sure that Encore is from the same maker of Applaws - I think it was created/marketed for the supermarkets so I would expect it to be along similar lines to Applaws.

http://mpmproducts.co.uk/

As with most of the Applaws range it may not be a "complete" food.

Thank you! Slightly confused - the website seems to suggest that Encore is a complementary food but then says that it also makes complete foods... but no specific information as to which are which. Looks like I had better check out details on the supermarkets' websites.

Same with Applaws - most of the range is complimentary but the pate version is complete. I wouldn't be surprised if Encore is the same. The biscuits would also be complete.

Karen

Well, I bought some Encore sachets for Sapphire to try and she LOVES them! Def recommended!
Glad she enjoyed them, Diana :cat:

The Encore pouch multipacks are described as 'complementary', but are just fine for a treat or for persuading a puss cat to eat.
The Encore pate's (the complete foods) are on the UK list, but I've given them a bit more space so they don't look as 'hidden'.

Yes I meant to mention that these are complementary foods and yes, perfect for tempting kitties when they don't want to eat. I wouldn't give them to Sapphire too often but they have a much greater meat content than Whiskas and I'm still trying to improve her diet so I guess that's what makes these "complementary". She won't eat Nature's Menu as I'd hoped. Am also investigating the HiLife brand which is also supposedly good quality.

They are high protein, but they are also too low in fat (for a 'complete' food) and they don't have the necessary vitamins/minerals added.
If Sapphire likes the Encore pouches, she might also like the pates..? (They aren't a smooth pate, they're quite textured) ...Or maybe the Applaws pates that Gill mentioned above...?
.

I'm not sure if she would eat the pate - presumably it's similar in consistency to Nature's Menu which is still what I'd like to get her onto really - good quality, readily available, reasonable price etc. Any ideas for getting her to eat more than a mouthful of it? I try it on a regular basis but end up chucking nearly all of it out.

If you want to try the Applaws pate I have some left - sky loved it nod won't touch it. I can send you a couple of trays to try? Pm me your address if you want a couple.

Karen
That's so kind of you, Karen, thank you. I wish more of the cat food manufacturers did single-pouch/tray sizes, or at least smaller boxes, so we can try them before committing to larger packs. I'll PM my address - thanks again!
Diana
