Just took another reading at +7 and it is down to 282.

How do you get so many mid day readings if you work?

I don't know how to link Cricket's previous thread...

I hate to sound like I'm complaining but how do you all afford this? I'm a single mom with a special needs kid, too many cats that have developed special needs over the years (2 life saving vet visits in the past 3 months on top of Cricket's diagnosis), and a mom who is out of work for an undefined amount of time due to an injury. Unfortunately, work decided that they don't need to offer worker's comp because they don't offer health insurance. She has gone to see a lawyer but the process could be very long. Cat food bills alone have gone up a few hundred dollars a month since Cricket's diagnosis and having to switch to wet food. Before, they would all share 2 large cans of wet food in the morning and at night and then graze on dry during the day. Now, even with the cheaper Fancy Feast, we are using 2 cans a day per cat which is 16 cans a day. I'm so overwhelmed. I love my cats. I love my family. I feel like I'm failing on all fronts.

I am sorry you are having such a tough time. Once everything settles down and Cricket is sorted, things will be better I am sure. It is hard at the moment with everything happening:bighug:
That +7 284 is showing that he is responding to the insulin. :)
If you have to go to work you can't get readings. Just get them at night and the weekends. Maybe you can get a +2 or +3 before you go to work and a +10 or +11 sometimes if that is possible. You can only do what is possible. Everyone understands that. Lots of people work and that is how they get readings inbetween shots.
I don't live in the US but I know there are some suitable low carb foods that are sold in large cans that would be more economical. I will see if I can find out what they are or someone might chime in with what they are.
You are not failing at all....in fact I think you are doing an amazing job juggling it all.:bighug:

:bighug::bighug::bighug:
You're doing great,
:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Nice to see a yellow.
I'm in Europe so can't help with suggestions on cost. I think the cheapest meter and strips to use in the us is the relion, a lot of folk use it.+
(Hopefully someone will chime in with that)

I would be lying if I said she never gets carbs though. We have a 13 year old angry kitty who needs (according to her) her Temptations cat treats. My mom found Cricket on the counter one night on her back with the plastic container opened and treats flowing out around her. There is a fine line between humor and horror lol. Oh, I also got her some ZeroCarb Tru Carnivore treats. Grain free, no veggies, no plant proteins, no digestible carbs.

This could be a big player right there. Some cats are so sensitive to carbs that we've seen a cat's blood sugar go up by hundreds of points from 3 teeny pieces of dry crunchies, and stay there for another day. Just depends on the cats. I've seen people here use Temptations to bring up blood sugar when their cat got low. Your pure meat treats will be great, though.

I think what I'd do for your angry kitty (lol, we know the queen needs what she needs) is to keep the food in a screw-type container instead, and when you give it to her, either put her in a separate room to eat or stand there to supervise and make sure she is actually the one that gets it.

I see that 282 - comparing it to the 307 2 hours before tells me that she's not dropping very fast. So I wouldn't rush to get another test in, but if you could get a test 2 hours after the 282, that would let you know if she's continuing on down or if that is the bottom of the nadir for this cycle. If you are short on strips, it can probably wait til pmps.

Great job catching the 2 midcycle tests today! That helps a ton!

You can only do what you can do - there are some expenses that are hard to reduce, but we have a lot of suggestions on keeping costs down. I don't know that particular glucometer. The cheapest that is accurate that I know of is the Arkray glucometer and strips through www.americandiabeteswholesale.com Those strips were identical to the brand name ones (same manufacturer) that were available for my Relion Confirm. Punkin's been gone for several years so I don't know what the most recent info is on these. I could buy 250 strips in a bundle - it was a deal that you bought 200 and got 50 free. When I last bought them I think it was about $65 for the 250 strips. The initial cost of the meter is almost unimportant - it's all about the strips because we use so many of them.

If you want to buy from American Diabetes Wholesale, you might want to register first with www.mrrebates.com. Then you get a percentage back on every purchase through ADW.

Some people buy strips off of ebay, or even craigslist. Be careful about the expiration date - buying through these is a case of buyer beware. I bought multiple boxes of insulin pens for about $50 each from craigslist - but I talked first to the seller. Her diabetic dad had passed away - her story seemed legitimate and the insulin worked fine for us.

Some people also buy insulin from Mark's Marine Pharmacy in Canada. I don't have experience with that. Since you have insulin currently, you probably have a little time to figure out what to do about insulin. @Chris & China can tell you how to buy from Mark's if you want that info.

Friskies canned food is probably the least expensive low carb that is widely available. Yes, it's lower quality than some canned, but the saying here is that the cheapest canned food is better than the most expensive dry food. Do whatever works for your budget.

If you want more tips, put something like "help with saving costs" in your subject line. Lots of people have tips that they use to make a budget work.

Don't think you are failing! This isn't easy, but you are in good company. Many people here are single and work full-time, and everyone understands a budget. It's not uncommon for our members to include elderly women who are on tight budgets. See where you can pare away some of the costs to make it a little more doable.

Hang in there!

They don't offer this deal anymore :(......with my Relion Confirm or Micro (I have both) I watch Ebay for deals on the strips.....I got 500 for $70 not long ago. The best deal ADW offers now is 2 boxes of 50 for $36.10 (which isn't any cheaper than the Relion strips at WalMart @ $35.88/100)....but if you register for the rebate site, that helps

Here's all the info on Buying Lantus/Levemir from Marks Marine Pharmacy.....they really have been a Godsend for lots of people who can't afford the crazy prices here in the US! They're totally legitimate and really wonderful to work with. A 5 pack of insulin pens will last until the expiration date on the box or until you use it up!! That's usually at least 2 years before expiration! Depending on the dose, you can figure out your monthly cost by dividing your daily dose amount into 1500 (the number of units in 5 pens).....so if your cat is on 1 unit twice a day, that 1500 units for $175 (including shipping) would last for 750 days and cost about $7/month

Both Friskies and Special Kitty (from WalMart) come in the bigger cans (12 or 13oz) and as long as it's the pates, they're fine for your diabetic and will help cut the costs for feeding everyone else too

I have to say, I don't know if the dose has evened out or it is the new cat food, but Cricket's numbers haven't reached 400 in a few days. It's the best run we've had so far. She loves dry food and prefers it over wet no matter what the wet variety. I invested in ZeroCarb by Young Again because I've heard, first hand, of someone's cat going into remission after starting it. It arrived on Friday night and that's when her numbers lowered. By Sunday afternoon Cricket was actually running up and down the hall. That never happens. She has also been jumping up on the table.

I will still be slowly upping her dose a little bit but I'm still truly impressed. I've been a bit depressed lately due to the cats and my mom being injured (she may never be able to return to the job she loves and no income in the near future) so I've been sleeping a lot when not at work so I haven't been able to get 4+ glucose readings a day. Today I'm taking my mom for an MRI. I don't want to up the dose until I get a mid cycle reading so hopefully Friday will be the day since I don't work on Friday. Then I will up it on Saturday morning since I am off on Saturday and keep an eye on Cricket.

All of the cats love the ZeroCarb. They love it so much that they tried to eat through the bag to get to it.
