Nothing but reds and purples after the 12/30 blues. I'm going to increase from 3 to 3.5 units tonight. This morning is the 6th consecutive cycle on 3 units. But I still need to find a vet who will follow his progress and be available for health problems and ongoing care, despite not being the one to decide on the dose changes.

In other news, my laptop's hard drive is fried. That's why I haven't posted since 12/30.

I'm going to try for a +2, +6, and +8 (at a minimum) today. +9 if it's lower at 8 than at 6. Considering going with the TR protocol, but still concerned about the inability to monitor overnight other than a +8 between doses of medication.
 
You're testing plenty at night for TR. With the reduced dose the morning of 12/30 the depot got a little out of sort and is likely just stabilizing today. Since he did see blue on this dose I'd only bring him up to 3.25u. Head on down Chino...nothing good up there buddy.
 
With 20% meter variance it's practically the same number :( Hopefully a food spike and he'll come down later today.

Your signature says he eats twice a day? It is easier on their pancreas when fed smaller meals multiple times a day. Many use an autofeeder. Are you also checking for ketones?
 
I can't always be home (or when I'm home but dealing with a critical work situation, can't always be available) at noon to feed them. 7a and 7p work well because they're outside of business hours.

I used an autofeeder with dry food but he managed to trick it! He would take a giant mouthful, drop it on the floor, then eat it away from the sensor that detects how much time he's spending at the bowl.

At a certain point, if he approaches remission, I'll have to feed to keep his BG up... What do people do about the other cat(s) in that situation? Do you feed them, too? I can't explain to one why the other gets food while he doesn't... and free-feeding doesn't work because he eats the little one's food. Even with wet food, I have to stay in the kitchen while they eat or he'll finish his bowl and go to the other one. The autofeeders I had before would only open for one cat, and would close or remain shut if it detected the tag on the other cat's collar, but they don't work for wet food.

Looks like he's starting to try and break the bounce which is what you want..back to blue and then to green some day.

Everyone uses the autofeeder with wet food. Some will freeze some wet in ice cube trays and place those in the autofeeder. Unfortunately my Doodles will only eat from my hand so I am his autofeeder :rolleyes:

Hey Adrien, I have a PetSafe5 that I use when I can't be home to dole out one of Bubba's 7 mini meals a day. I actually bought two of them ( I have 2 cats) and Forrest, my civvie is not fed exactly the same way as Bubba, 7 mini meals and day and eats the same exact food . I am home full time taking care of my 89 year old mother with Alzheimer's so it is doable for me.

When Bubba got the DX of diabetes, I couldn't chance Bubba getting into High Carb dry food so I transitioned them to Fancy Feast Classics by using Young Again Dry food ( about 1 % carbs) and grinding it up and sprinkling it over their new LC wet food. It worked! Now they eat 1/2 their meals of canned food, (they eat Nature's Variety now) and 1/2 their meals are raw, duck, and turkey.

I am not sure how many cats you have and how feasible it is for you to have more than 1 auto feeder but it is a real life saver to keeping your kittie safe. And yes, you can freeze portions and bring them out and put into the feeder for the later in the day feedings . When I have had to do that, I put unfrozen wet food in the sections that will be eaten within 6 hours and frozen for any that would be eaten later than that for food safety sake.

Just curious, what kind of food safe are you using now that senses them eating? With our feeding schedule, it's pretty much every 3 hours so once the section swings open for access they each have 3 hours with that portion. ( It never last more than 5 minutes top with my two food hounds)

Typical nadir for Lantus is around +6 but it can vary for the same cat. Bubba use to be a late nadir cat with his nadirs in the beginning and the end of his cycle ( that was confusing until it was figured out) Since he is back on insulin again since November, he now nadirs in the middle of the cycle. My point being that even when you think you have the nadir figured it out, kitty can change it at any time. (that' in their rule book) LOL
 
Below is taken from the stickie for beginners. After you gather more data you will understand where your kitty's nadir is and this is just a guideline. Note all that is in bold type: "until well regulated". And Karen is correct that not every kitty reads this stickie but as a newbie, it gives you some guidelines until you have enough data to know what Chino is doing.

Example of an ACTIVE, but NOT necessarily typical Lantus cycle:
NOTE: Until kitty is pretty well regulated, the description below is NOT not what you'd consider a "typical" Lantus cycle. It takes time and patience for kitty to achieve a "typical" cycle! The example below is what you're working towards (a nice shallow curve). A relatively flat cycle is the ultimate goal.

+0 - PreShot number.
+1 - Usually higher than PreShot number because of the last shot wearing off. May see a food spike in this number.
+2 - Often similar to the PreShot number. You'll probably see an active cycle if the +2 is the same/similar OR lower than the preshot number. Continue testing!
+3 - Lower than the PreShot number, onset has started.
+4 - Lower.
+5 - Lower.
+6 - Nadir/Peak (the lowest number of cycle. NOTE: ECID. Not every cat has a mid-cycle nadir. Adjust the hours on this example to fit your cat.)
+7 - Surf (hang around the nadir number).
+8 - Slight rise.
+9 - Slight rise.
+10 - Rising.
+11 - Rising (one of the quirks of Lantus/Levemir: some cat's blood glucose numbers dip around +10 or +11... not to be confused with nadir).
+12 - PreShot number.

I was using Wireless Whiskers, and had one for each: https://www.catfooddispensersreviews.com/wireless-whiskers/

It kept Chino out of Fox's food, and it kept Fox from trying to scarf it all down before Chino could get to it, which often led to vomiting... which Chino then ate. They got 12 minutes daily in 4 intervals (2.5 minutes at midnight, 0600, 1200, and 1800). The problem is that it only works with dry food, and Chino found a way to outsmart the machine and eat as much as he wanted.

There is a bowl that would work with wet food that only opens when it detects a certain microchip, but it only holds one meal at a time, and Fox's microchip has migrated down his back to where the sensor wouldn't be able to detect it.

Check into the PetSafe5. They are only about 37 bucks each on Amazon. They will give you more leeway with the meals and timing.
