Might also be worth looking here for info:

Thanks this is helpful. I am also looking into raw.

The catinfo.org site is super helpful, but it's like one long run on paragraph...a little overwhelming to read. I gave up last night after making it around half way through and skimming the rest to see how much longer the page was. The author needs to break up the info on her page into more digestible (pun intended) sections for the reader.

Mogs, looked at the link you sent me and saw this comment:

"We met with a Tufts University nutritionist and she asked that we no longer feed him any human food. She was also concerned with a raw diet. Because of his diabetes, he would have a lower immunity to fight against bacteria found in raw meat"

Wonder what folks think about this being true in feeding cats with FD raw?

I went to the pet feed store by my house and stocked up on a ton of low carb kitty food that is referenced on Dr. Lis Pierson's food chart. I bought my kitties a selection of cheaper quality LC wet food, mid-quality LC wet food, high-quality LC wet food and SOME RAW!

I am so excited to start them on raw food. I bought 2 small tubs of Rad Cat (1 chicken and 1 turkey) as well as a bag of Stella and Chewy's Rabbit morsels. I was able to defrost a few of the rabbit morsels and mix them in with Ozzy and Figgie's dinner tonight. Figgie, my ultimate picky kitty, wanted nothing to do with it. I tried pushing a little into his mouth to see if he would take to it (sometimes I have to do this with new foods because he is so picky and doesn't realize he will like something new) and he ate it but was not interested in any more. Will have to work on him. Ozzy voluntarily ate several bites that were mixed in with his chicken dinner. So success for first time exposure for him. I'm hopeful they will take to it later on and plan to try to wean in more raw with their canned food.

I also got Ozzy some treats to give to him when doing his BG testing. I got a small bag of Pure Bites Freeze Dried Chicken because I wasn't sure if he would like them or not. Whoa was I surprised! As soon as I opened the bag he came barreling around the corner for them. I have never ever seen him run so fast and be so excited! When I tried to do his ear testing, he was so excited for his treat I almost had to hold him down. It was pretty funny. I put the bag of treats up in the box with all his testing supplies and when I came back into the room later, he had knocked the box over and all the supplies were on the floor. I cannot overexeggerate how excited my kitty is for these treats! I think part of it has to do with the fact that they are in 'a bag' (like his old carby kibble was) and they are 'crunchy' (like his old carby kibble was) because they are freeze dried. I cannot tell you how much joy it brought me to see my kitty SO happy and excited. I know that testing time is going to get better with these treats (or harder!). I will make sure not to open the bag until AFTER the ear poke so I don't have to wrestle him down! Hahah!

Just wanted to share.

Hoping for some success with raw over the next few days.

I give all of mine lysine as a supplement recommended by my vet...it comes as a small triangle shaped soft treat and they each get 3 pieces each a day. I have to keep it behind a baby locked cabinet because they know where it is and are determined to get to it...would gobble up the whole pouch if I let them!

I get the 1-pound bottles of Now brand L-Lysine and add a little over 1/4 tsp to their food. Much less expensive and the treats.

Just wanted to report back that both Ozzy and Figgie have been eating raw food mixed in with their regular wet food for the last couple of days and are doing really well on it. Better than I thought they would do this soon. I just mix in a little with their wet food and stir around all the juices from the wet over the raw. They usually start out eating around it but then once they get more to the center of the plate, they just start eating it too. If some is left over, it is usually gone later when they come back looking for 2nds.

All my cats and our 2 dogs love the freeze dried chicken. I have to store it in mason jars. Callie will rip open any bag of food or pull off any lid that doesn't have a screw on lid. All I have to do to get any of my pets to come is to shake the jar and they all come running Callie will jump up on the table that I test her on hoping I will give her a treat. It is so easy to test her blood.

I found I could save a lot by buying the freeze dried chicken for dogs. It is the same product, just it comes in bigger bags. The pieces are larger, so I cut it into smaller pieces.

Great tip- will look for these next time Im at the pet food store.

Cute story!!! I love hearing about all the silly antics from everyones pets. The other night I came in and found the bag on the floor with little tiny kitty teeth holes in it!! Ozzy was trying real hard to get to his favorite treat! Haha! They are on top of the fridge now!

Our Trixie can jump up to the top of the fridge and knock down anything edible. Trixe, Callie or Gizmo will rip it open and they will all have a party. I have to keep ALL food where the cats can't get to it. I have a terrible time with Callie because her BG shoots up anytime she finds any contraband. This afternoon my DH found her with a torn open bag of treats for my granddaughter‘s parakeet. She doesn't bother the bird, just the treats. This is a new
trick for her. I just crawled into bed when I heard something in the kitchen make a noise. I hobbled out and found a large plastic container of parsleyflakes on the floor and 3 cats with "Who me?" looks on their faces. The forth cat was hiding somewhere. Those cats are just too darn smart!

I think we need a "your cat ate what" thread.

This is TOO funny!!!:woot::cat:

It is used to hopefully prevent further flare ups of herpes. The herpes virus requires arginine to replicate. Lysine competes with arginine. Every species has their own herpes virus. In cats it is an upper respiratory infection rather than a sexually transmitted virus as in people. As with people though once you have herpes you will always have it. It becomes dormant but can become active at any time. There are anti viral medications such as Famciclovir. Lysine is commonly used. Whether it helps depends on who you ask. Some vets recommend it and others say there is no proof that it helps. I am hoping it helps Morris. I don't want to do any further cycles of Famvir if possible. Morris bites. :)

Yes, thank you. For years we were told long term use of L-Lysine didn't pose any problems. Unfortunately, there's now quite a bit of contradicting info out there. Although, truth be told, I've yet to see anything conclusive, one way or another. I've simply been curious as to how others were handling L-Lysine use...

Personally, I've decided to opt for a conservative approach with all supplements (including L-lysine) because despite what the label says, supplements may have chemical ingredients or a contaminant that could cause harm. I also think many of us have a tendency to throw too many/sometimes unnecessary supplements and/or meds at our kitties in our zest to keep them healthy and make them feel better. Sometimes these supplements/meds can cause organ damage, specifically liver failure, when metabolized by the body. It's just a personal choice. :)

I was advised to give the lysine forever. 3 of my 7 have a herpes conjunctivitis that flares periodically. And since I know there is the virus in my house, I expect it is dormant in the other 4. It was diagnosed when the first one developed a conjunctivitis that didn't respond to any of the antibiotics we tried. Finally the vet did a mail out lab smear that confirmed the herpes. Since I know what we are dealing with I just call the vet and get an Rx for both an antibiotic (oral) and a antiviral eye drop and start the mess before the conjunctivitis really gets bad.
