Has anyone done this, even if it was a half dose? Going away for weekend and wanted to pre fill a dose a few hrs before giving the shot, anyone try it? thx

We don't recommend pre-filling syringes.....what we usually suggest if there's a caretaker giving shots is to fill a "sample" syringe with a colored liquid so the person giving the shots has something to compare to

Is there a problem with pre-filling? I've done this the night before at times.

I think it depends on the insulin: vetsulin and prozinc need to be gently rolled to mix the zinc and solution before injecting it. The solution could settle again in a pre-filled syringe and it would be difficult to mix it again. I don't have any experience with other insulins though.

I recently pre-filled prozinc. The recommendation was to roll bottle before pre-filling, & then roll syringe before injecting. Also, stored with cap up to prevent clogging. Can you ask your vet? (This is my experience.)

Ooops. I've done this with Caninsulin when Noah's numbers were low enough he did not need a shot. The syringe remained sterile, cap on, and put back in the same place in the fridge where the insulin is kept. I'm not to try and save money if it's at the expense of my cats health.

This was my experience as well.

The research I've seen for Lantus is that there are concerns about the lubricant in the syringes causing issues with the effectiveness of the insulin. With Lantus pre-filling is not recommended.

The lubricant may degrade the insulin.
