now that the holidays are over and the dust has settled from mr b's dramatic quick drops last week, i am wondering how on 12/22 he went from 449 to at least as low as 122 a mere two hours after his shot.

How is this physically possible? Anyone have a theory? BCP PZI is not a depot insulin. The nadir 'should' be at +6. There are plenty of days we've had where he barely moves within 6 hours, nevermind 2!

Would love to hear what you all think. I'm just trying to understand how it could have acted so quickly.

I suspect there are absorption issues that can have an effect on bioavailability. I suspect that this is part of Teasel's problem. I vary the injection site quite a bit but can't say for sure there's an effect one way or the other.

I have read about PZI's less than optimal bioavailability. You could Google that. It's not restricted to PZI though. Shoeskitty's mom wants him off Lantus because he has absorption issues with it.

Good to know but as we say, ECID. Only offered that as a possibility. One metaphor is that of an old car that hasn't been run in a while - engine sputters into life before running properly. Could be analogous to insulin response in a long unregulated kitty.

BCP PZI is not a depot insulin.

I know little or nothing about this insulin, Jen, but sometimes in-out insulins may show some carryover of BG lowering effect into the next cycle so there could potentially be an overlap between doses.

Looking at 12/22 data do you think he might have been clearing a bounce and the 4.2IU dose might have been too much at that particular time?

The only other thing that popped into my head looking at the PM cycle for the date above is the 'tick mark' shape of the curve: sharp dip early in cycle closely followed by a bit of a jump in BG then numbers staying fairly high for the rest of the cycle. It's a pattern sometimes seen when the insulin dose is too high.

NB: Brainstorming here. Other members may have concrete suggestions as to what is happening with MisterBee's BG levels.

Hi Mr. B's Mom, I'm still new to all this... I was looking at your SS and see you switched from Lantus to PZI. What was the reason for the switch? Do you think Mr. B is doing better on the PZI?

on paper it might look like we did better on lantus, but something about it seemed to not agree with him. he had stopped purring at some point over the months, he didnt seek out to be touched/petted, he developed facial twitching, he started hiding, wouldnt walk around the house like he used to. i know there were more things i cant recall now but overall it was just he seemed so unhappy. we had trouble regulating his bg, but it seemed to be more than that. even when he had good numbers, he didnt act well.

so after 10 months i said forget this lets try something else. at some point soon after swtiching to vetsulin and then to bcp pzi, he started purring again, acting brighter, the twitching went away, he started walking into rooms he hadnt been in for months, stopped hiding entirely. though we've had trouble regulating, and his ss isnt so impressive, he seems to be happier on this stuff. i would never want to go back on lantus.

i had posted an FYI about how he was on lantus, and how his behavior improved on bcp pzi, but of course i cant find it now. cant recall when i posted it.

My hubby named him...thought he was going to be a big tough cat when he grew up and wanted to name him after the rock star, Ozzy Osbourne. He turned out to be a total fradey pussy cat with a tiny sweet meow...and the sweetest most gentle cat I've ever had. We LOVE him to pieces!

Sounds like you guys made the absolute wisest choice on switching him....they say it's not all about the numbers, his clinical signs definitely are equally important. I am so happy Mr. B is back to his old self. I'd be so SAD if my kitty stopped purring!!!
