Good day for the boy & I'm getting used to the short needles. It was suggested to dose him at.5 to start so that's what's happening now. The first day (yesterday) I was told that 1U might be a bit high.

So I will hold the dose at.5 for 6 days and go from there. Still vascillating between SLGS and TR. SLGS seems like a natural way to start and appears to be more straight forward. TR offers possible remission but I find it hard to retain all the details.

There are some sugar-moms that have helped me with Oscar so you may want to journey with him re his insulin change.

Looks like Oscar is off to a good start with the Lantus. Since it takes some time for the depot to get established with Lantus the 0.50 unit dose is a good starting point. Hopefully Oscar will settle into nice curves with no major ups or downs. So far it is looking good!

Sheila, Hi and Welcome to Lantus and Levemir Land!

Nice to see greens yesterday and today. After you gather a bit of data with him on Lantus, you will more comfortable making the choice of TR vs SLGS. The only differences are how long you hold the dose and the reduction number. We will help you along the way and no need to think that you have to retain all the details already. Heck, it's been one year we've been in L & L and I still have lapses of knowledge and peeps help me stay on track.

Your avatar is adorable!

Wishing you the best of luck with Oscar, Sheila. :)

I agree Oscar is off to a great start. I'll be watching to see how things go with fingers crossed that he gets some nice smooth surfing going on in the blues and greens!

FWIW You can start with SLGS and move to TR when and if you feel ready to do so. You don't have to make a decision immediately and some cats go into remission with SLGS too. :)

if you were to use the slgs method, the protocol would have you reduce the dose at the next shot as that 79 is less than the reduction point of 90.
What is 79 and 90 in Canadian numbers? I didn't think I was supposed to tamper with the dose until after 6 doses. I'm confused with what you're trying to tell me - sorry.

You don't tamper unless you hit those "bonus" numbers which in your case will be 5 mmol (90 US) using SLGS. Since Oscar got down to 4.4 (79 US) today he earned a reduction of his dose by 0.25u. Yeah Oscar! :)

With SLGS you would reduce the dose at 90 US ( 5 mmol Cdn) With TR the reduction point is 68US (3.8 mmol Cdn)

The starting dose is held UNLESS the numbers drop below the reduction level. TR has increases done every 3 days (6 cycles) as needed or a reduction at 2.8 mmol (50US) while SLGS holds the dose for one week unless the numbers drop below 5 mmol (90 US)

ETA You do enough testing to follow the TR protocol. The only thing the TR protocol requires is that the kitty not be eating any dry foods.

ETA Corrected the reduction level for TR

Here's your post from yesterday....We like to have the link to the prior day's post in the current one so it's easy for people to quickly go back and see what's been going on

I'm sure glad you dropped back to .5!! Oscar is looking good for so early....and it looks like Lantus is going to be a much better insulin for him too!

With TR the reduction point is 68US (3.8 mmol Cdn)

Using a human meter, on TR the reduction point is 50 (2.8)

Thanks for the correction Chris. I had that 68 in mind because I use a pet meter. DUH!!!! I will correct my posts.

How do you link the posts together? Does it automatically come up when you use the words - post from yesterday?

How do you link the posts together?

You can just copy the link from the address bar and "paste" it

If you want to make it "fancy" (if you can call what I did "fancy") you type what you want to say, like "yesterday's post" and then go back and "highlight" those words (like you would if you were going to copy them)

Once highlighted, click on the little icon along the top that looks like a single link in a chain....a new little box will pop up....paste the ACTUAL link into that box and click "insert"

Sheila

If you are doing SLGS now, you should have taken the dose back to 0.25u tonight since he earned a reduction with the 79 (4.4). Since he bounced pretty good, it's ok that you shot 0.5u tonight but you should decrease the dose to 0.25u tomorrow.

Here's an image showing what 0.25u looks like:

@Marje and Gracie thank you for your info. I didn't receive your comment until AFTER I did Oscar's AMPS. Maybe I should do his insulin at .25 this evening?? I just did his BG a few minutes ago (close to noon , +5) and it was only 2.1. I gave him honey on the gums and a treat.

Hey Sheila, definetly take the dose to .25 tonight. He earned the reduction yesterday and shooting through the bounce last night was okay to do but, he should have gotten the .25 dose this AM . Glad you caught the 38 and hopefully he has come up for you. Please check 20 minutes from the time you gave him some honey and post again.

Sheila, you need to test Oscar again 15-20 minutes after giving the honey and treat to make sure he is holding or rising. Then depending on that reading you need to get at least 3 readings indicating he is holding at a decent number or rising before you let your guard down.

He definitely needs that dose reduction tonight!

@Bobbie And Bubba are you going to be around for a bit to keep an eye on Sheila and Oscar. I need to run out to do a few last minute errands but don't want to leave them alone just in case they need any support! :)

Sheila

Can you start a new thread please so you can keep the numbers from today updated in the subject line? You should be testing every 30 mins until he is safely in the 50s; then you can go to an hour but the carbs you gave wear off fast so you'll have to keep testing until he's still coming up or is stable at safe numbers for over two hours with only low carb food or no food.

Great...thank you. Please test in an hour and post.

Would now be a time you could please start a new thread and link this one? Also, since this is a US based site, we would appreciate it if you could look at his US SS and then post his numbers in the US mg/dL format. Several of us scan the subject lines to see that everyone is safe and if we have to take time to convert numbers from anyone outside the US, it reduces the time we have to help. Also, in an emergency, it helps us help you faster if we aren't having to do conversions. Yes, we can look at his SS link but if he's low, we just need to quickly advise you on action to take...fast.

Thank you, Sheila.
