Both cats not interested in food at the same time...

Hi all, I have one diabetic cat (Socks) and one non-dm cat (Taz), I started both on Fancy Feast Classic Chopped Mix Grill about a week ago. They loved it, I loved the price and my DM cat's sugars were looking good, but over the weekend, both have been decreasingly loosing their appetite.. My non-dm cat almost immediately lost all interest since Saturday (but has been eating about half as much as usual due to continual offering of different foods). But my diabetic baby is just slowly eating less and less... took about an hour for him to eat his normal meal, which normally takes about 4 minutes...

Last time I was at the vet, my vet suggested that my diabetic bubby has Triaditis, as he had a recent 5 day hospitalization for Pancreatitis mostly. Socks has recovered well, but I would normally assume this as a flare - but both cats are acting COMPLETELY normal other than their lack of interest. Socks is still eating almost all of his food, just very slowly..

Socks is negative for Ketones, so that's not the issue.. But if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know..

Some have said FF has changed and their cats are refusing to eat it. I don't know if the flavor you're using is one that has changed. Bumping you up for other ideas.

Did the new cans come from the same case/lot as the original cans (assuming you buy it in a case rather than loose cans)? We buy our FF in the plastic wrapped cases of 24 cans, and there have absolutely been times when I crack open a new case of the same flavor, the little monsters all come in for breakfast, and multiple of them just sniff it (don't even taste), and walk away. I look, and sure enough the lot numbers are different.

I usually just return the rest of the case to PetSmart and exchange it for the same flavor and they love it again. There must be just enough variation from one lot to another sometimes that their finicky noses pick up on it. Except Whisper -- he'll eat everything every time, so even on cans from cases that the others don't like, Whispy eats it and doesn't get sick or anything. So I know that the food isn't bad/spoiled/harmful, it's just "different". But I exchange the whole case anyway since they play musical bowls at meal time!

Good luck,
Sandi&Whisper

I unfortunately bought some loose cans, but will definitely be buying more tonight. My diabetic cat is eating normally now, and only wants FF, but other cat is back to an old food he did well on.. I did switch them both over immediately to FF from their old food, so i think the change in food caused these upset tummys... but they are both eating, just my other cat is eating 1/2 can instead of 3/4, so it seems like theyre steadily improving. Thanks for the input!

Good, at least they are eating.

Absolutely, the quick switch itself could cause a problem. Most people recommend a one week switch, but one of my boys has a tricky stomach and I do it even slower than that -- decreasing the % of old food and increasing the % of new food every day over a couple weeks.

:bighug:

Glad they are eating again. My two can be so finicky-it makes me want to pull my hair out!

This happened to me back in March... Both cat mysteriously stopped being interested in food and slept all day. No vomiting. No litterbox troubles. Just not eating. When it went on for 3 days, I got worried!

Ended up bring the one will the longer symptoms (Gordy) to the Vet and they did blood work up on him.

$300 blood test later (they ran a FULL panel because I guess it was odd)... they have elated white cell counts. Paid that find out both cats had colds and that's it. They felt better the next day. ;)

ETA: I'm happy they are back to normal!
