Noah gets a lot of litter (Purina Tidy Cat) stuck between his pads. Noah's a big boy so his pee clumps are big! He's not trying to clean it which I assume would end up in his gastro-intestinal system. He hates it when we pick at his paws and obviously soaking his pads in water would turn the litter into mud. It's been suggested I layer the top of his box with shredded newsprint. My concerns: the ink in the newsprint, whatever chemicals are used to make paper, what will happen if he ingests some while grooming. We haven't tried this yet because we can't even find the paper. I've heard of people using cedar chips but that doesn't clump and with 6 cats we'd be chopping down a lot of trees. Any thoughts?

Perhaps try a fine-grade, wood-based clumping litter. I use OKOPlus Cat's Best litter. I'm in the UK but I believe a similar product is available in the US - just can't remember the name of the product.

The OKO litter is lightweight, forms good clumps that are really easy to scoop, is excellent for deodorising plus it's more economical in use than clay litters. It's easy to remove litter from paw pads with a light brushing or a quick wipe with some kitchen paper.

Cool avatar, BTW. :)

I used Yesterdays new cat litter, it was made from recycled news paper and never had a problem. Now Perkins just uses bed pads because it's hard for him to lift his legs.

I had to switch to plain old non-scoopable/non-clumping cat litter. Chuck sounded like he was wearing tap shoes every other day. We also went through 38 pounds of fresh step in a week! He was peeing buckets! He has since slowed down with the peeing but I'm still using about 25 pounds a week to a week and a half changing it out every 3 days. But doing so lets me use less in the box so it's not too heavy for me to lift (bad back). And it's only $4 per bag.

I swear by Okocat Natural Wood Clumping Litter. It lasts a long time, is great at odor control, and they don't track it around like they do all the other litters. You can get it here at Chewy.com but it's also available at many other places.

I use World's Best and with 7 cats find it to be cost effective and doesn't cause any problems with their feet. It is relatively dust free and is flushable so worth the slightly higher cost.

I use Fresh Step but mix a cup or so of World's Best in with it. It keeps the pee from sticking like glue to the bottom of the pan and it doesn't seem to get stuck in between my cat's toes. Before, we were soaking his feet to get the litter off. I can't use Worlds Best alone as it doesn't clump enough on it's own and my cat pees alot.
