Hey guys.
Its has been a while.
The home made food has been going well.
Actually I am now grinding for 4. To starving kittens showed up a few months ago. They were laying the garage with Shadow and Silky. We decided to rescue instead of sending them to a shelter.

Anyway to the question at hand.

I have generally been using Natures Made Fish Oil.
1200mg.
So I just picked up 2 jars of 300 on sale. 1200mg on the front. I decided to read the label as I noticed differences between labels on the same brand.

Product details on the site.

Trust your heart health with Nature Made® Fish Oil 1200 mg. Every 2 softgels provide 720 mg of heart health Omega-3s (600 mg EPA/DHA).†

Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

  • Nature Made® supports leading heart health experts who recommend eating 250-500mg of EPA/DHA per day to help support a healthy heart.**
  • Every 2 softgels provide 600 mg of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.
Nature Made® Fish Oil 1200 mg Softgel is guaranteed to meet our high quality standards – it is made from carefully selected ingredients under strict manufacturing processes.

So I am not sure what the missing 480mg are.
Also Doc Pierson states in her recipe the following:
http://catinfo.org/making-cat-food/#The_Recipe

5000 – 10,000 mg fish oil (5-10 capsules of the average 1,000 mg capsule) – I use 10 capsules for my cats. Fish oil is a good source of essential fatty acids – note that this is increased from the original amount of 2,000 mg – if your cat does not like fish, it is ok to use only 2,000 mg

Now I have been using 7 capsules of 1200 which brings me to her 5000 mg level. Based on the 720mg number.
Now here is where I am uncertain. I am surprised I didnt pick up on this a long time ago.
Doc Pierson says 5- 10 capsules of average 1000mg. Is she actually using capsules that contain 1000mg of Omega's each? Or is she just using one 1000mg capsule when the actual serving size would be 2 capsules as stated on my bottle?

If the later is the case. Then I can reduce the amount of capsules I am using and cut down on cost. And perhaps not over saturating their food with fish oil.

Lastly I see no mention in Doc Piersons recipe for using a Triple Omega mix with Omegas-6 and 9. Should I consider switching to that?

As usual.
Thank you in advance for any incite provided.

I *think* you just go by the mg of the capsule (1200 in your case). At least that's what I do.
I also follow her recipe and I opt for the higher amount she recommends, 10,000 mg for 3 lbs. of meat. I use the Carlson's salmon oil, they are 1000 mg capsules, so I use 10 per lb 3lbs of meat, or 3333 mg per lb of meat.
If you are wanting the lower end, 5000 per 3 lbs of meat, it would be 1666 per lb of meat. About 4 of the 1200 mg capsules for 3 lbs.

I have been doing 7 capsules of the 1200 per 3 lbs.
I also add about 1.5lbs of hearts and giblets per 5lbs of of chicken.
Generally making between 14 and 20lbs at a shot. Depending how ambitious I feel. :)
