Can't trust my mom to take care of my sugar kitty.

Hello guys. It's a been a few weeks since I've been on here. As you can see by my spreadsheet, I have literally no idea how my mom has been taking care of my cat.

She's inconsistent with how much to feed him. (I tell her TWO CANS OF T&T Fancy Feast CLASSICS; then she goes and and buys the GRILLED version and she says "Oh I didn't feed him that". I had to go back to the grocery store, return them, and buy the Classics Fluffy needed; I've done this before too.)
She doesn't write the BG #s down and when she took them.
She doesn't warm his ear before the prick.
She takes too small blood samples which tends to skew the results.
She feeds him inconsistent amounts, like if she feeds him 2 cans in the morning, she'll feed him 1 can at night, and switch it up, so he eats around 3-4 cans a day?
She feeds him sometimes 30 minutes before the shot.
She says she's been giving him 2.5 U of Lantus 8:30 am and pm, but who knows if that's really true.

I call her. Text her. Leave notes. Kindly remind her if she needs help or clarification with anything.
But "she's too busy" taking care of two kids. She spends her time in the house while they're at school. I'm a student, no car, only way of getting home is for dad to drive me back and from the university. He leaves at the morning around 5. I tried going back and forth from home to uni (everyday I have 8 am classes), but then my grades began to suffer, my sleep, and my relationship is struggling as my partner has some tendencies towards drug addiction. I already have terrible anxiety. I don't go out. I don't have a life except for school and my cat and relationship issues.

Anytime I try to kindly correct her, she lashes out at me. Says "I should even be grateful for the cat being taken care of." "You should just put him to sleep." "Who cares, he's old. You need to suck it up." She doesn't care for Fluffy like I do. She grew up in Mexico where she owned a lot of cats that lived inside, outside the house, died, she's been through it all. But I've had Fluffy for 16 years.

It's driving me crazy. I hate going home for the holidays because I have to see my cat right there reading numbers in the 200s and 300s, and I feel like I can't do anything. I have tried to be very patient with Lantus. I know I can't expect quick results. I've had him on Novolin where he dipped into very healthy green numbers, but spiked back up. I'm even wondering if there's anyone who's used Novolin to get him down from very high numbers, and then at the end of Novolin's nadir, gave shots from Lantus to help level it out. I don't know, I'm probably just making it more complicated.

I am a control freak, and I accept it. I can handle feeling uncomfortable with his numbers, because at least I can know what to do from there and try something else. But not knowing data, not knowing what to put in my spreadsheet, not knowing whether or not my mom is doing the right things; it's making me feel sick.

I don't know what to do. I've tried everything to help make this easy for her, to make her involved. But I feel bad for all the burden my poor sugar kitty has put on her. I am thinking of sneaking my him into my apartment. My roommates are very kind, quiet people, and have said before that they would have no problem with Fluffy staying with us, but it worries me a little because we are not allowed to have pets at all. Our landlord has never inspected our area though so at least I could feel comfortable with that. And I don't know if the change in environment will be stressful for Fluffy; though it may be even better because we are all very quiet people and it is a very quiet neighborhood.

I'll be home for the next few days and I'll be watching him closely, but I'll have to be gone for a week for finals. Then I'll be home for the next three weeks until the next semester starts. You folks at this forum have been so helpful to me, I just am wondering your opinion on all of this. My main concern is my cats health. Thanks :(

I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time with this. The short answer is your current set up isn't working. Your mom has other people and things demanding her time and attention and she'll never have the same focus on Fluffy that you do. Fluffy needs to be with you - somehow.

As far as his treatment goes, if you took it over again and used the Lantus in a careful, methodical way you'd probably have better results. It's not a good idea for you to combine it with a fast acting insulin.

We could help you more if you streamlined your spreadsheet and used it only to record doses and BG numbers with notes kept only under "Remarks" on the far right side.

I apologize if this note seems harsh or unfeeling. I certainly don't mean it that way. You're totally overwhelmed right now by all the pressures in your life. I'm just trying to say, "Stop. Look. Here's the problem."

Oh no you're fine haha :cat: not at all. Thank you so much. I think I'm at that point where I need to bring him to the apartment because I can watch him better, thank you. Okay, I will move the notes to my remarks. :)

I moved in with my current roommate 4 years ago. She had two cats already when I moved in. The landlord allows only two cats and she pays an extra $15 a month for the second cat. I sneaked my cat into the apt and he is still here. The landlord has come over to work in the apt and Smoky just runs and hides so he doesn't know he is here. My mom would not learn to test smoky or give him shots so I had to sneak him into my current apt. I'm just saying I know how you feel is all.

@Jill & Alex (GA) thank you so much for the methods! I have tried at the beginning the start low, go slow, but I'm just never able to be at home enough to be aggressive in his control. Thank you so much. :bighug:

@Lisa and Smoky thank you so much for sharing your story. I wish we could depend on the people we love to take care of our cats, but sometimes I know that taking care of a sugar kitty is too much for some people. I think I am going to end up bringing him to my apartment starting winter break. Thanks :)

You both are very dedicated cat owners~ :bighug:

Nat,

Do you think if you asked your landlord and explained it was a special needs senior cat dependent on insulin and offered to pay a pet deposit they might let you have him in? They might require up to date vaccines. And if you keep very quiet so other tenants don't know about it.

!!! I could ask my landlord that! I asked her before I moved in if I could have my cat and she said sorry that they couldn't, even when I offer to pay. But if I mention he is senior and insulin dependent, that could be something they could consider. But part of me is like... if I ask again, will they get suspicious... 0__0

They could and might watch you more carefully to see if you bring one in.

I say don't ask the landlord. If they find him, say he's there just for the weekend (or something like that). I live in a college town, and landlords are most worried about damage and don't care what the reason is that you are breaking the rules. Understand, you might not get your security deposit back if they find him.

Thanks guys. It's worth the risk. What really upsets me is that the apartment right across from us is able to have a bulldog and the owner smokes. Not even fair? :blackeye:

Have you had a chance to read the two dosing protocols many of our Lantus members use?
Both methods have been successful in controlling kitty's blood sugar when using Lantus.

That's not surprising to me. Most landlords are very much against cats. Do you have carpets in your apt? Our landlord assumes that cats are going to dig up the wall to wall carpeting and ruin it. He also thinks that cats stink because of the litter box. Of course, he doesn't have an issue with the people downstairs having a dog.

Ah of course... dogs totally make more noise and scratch up the floor and everything! We do, but it's only in the bedrooms. The rest is hardwood floor. And the carpets look like crap anyway, and I'm always very diligent to clean his cat litter like twice a day so there'll be no sign of feline here >:)

We have carpeting except in bathroom and kitchen. The people downstairs have a bulldog puppy, how is that quiet? Our carpets are crappy too. I'll bet if we leave the landlord will replace all the carpeting, paint the apt, and then jack up the rento_O

Have a look at this web site - https://firepaw.org/companion-animal-renters-program-materials/ - and prepare a plan to discuss with the landlord on the advantages of renting to a qualified tenant with a pet.
There are specific concerns a landlord has with having pets, due to some folks being irresponsible and not managing waste, preventing damage, and controlling/preventing fleas. It might be possible to persuade the landlord that you can be responsible and protect the landlord's investment while having your cat with you.

LOL all landlords must be dog people then -_-

If you use the fine grade wood-based litter it is brilliant for odour control, plus it's easy to scoop the clumps and much more economical than clay-based litters. @Squalliesmom - Lucy, IIRC I think you use this type of litter stateside; could you post the name of the product you use, please? (I'm in the UK and I use OKOPlus Cat's Best; it's a gift from the Kitty Gods!)

Yes, here it's just Okocat. It comes in different formulas, I like the natural wood pellets the best. It's a great litter for odor control, works great for my four cats! Best litter I've ever used!
