Curious question about the different insulins

Gordy is currently on Vetsulin, and while I LOVE the "flexibility" it gives, I am starting to think its not the insulin for him.

My issue is, sometimes I need to adjust his PM shot time because I work 2 jobs and have to juggle his shot in. I try and always give it between 5:30-6:30. I have no one else (right now) to assist me to be exactly 12 hours. My second job has been very understanding but I don't think I can ask for more changes without affecting my status there.

If I were to go to a different insulin, like a depot one, how would that affect it? I want what's best for Gordy, but it needs to be feasible for me.

It sounds like you could easily stay within a half hour of 12 hours, which is a safe amount to vary in a day. If you could give him his morning shot around 6, and then his evening shot between 5:30 and 6:30 I don't think the variation would be a problem.
Lantus is a very good insulin for many cats, My Leda responded much better to Lantus than he did when he was on NPH.

ProZinc would likely be better for your erratic schedule. You can easily use a reduce dose and in really necessary an increased dose since like Vetsulin, ProZinc is NOT a depot insulin like Lantus and Levemir.

The statement that Lantus or Levemir (depot insulins) have to be shot every 12 hours exactly doesn't work for most people's lifestyles. It's silly to think people have to be chained to their cat to shoot every 12 hours... on the dot. However, I will say that in the beginning it's easier to get a handle on your kitty's response to Lantus or Levemir when shot on a 12/12 schedule, but as time goes on, being a bit off schedule is not as big a deal as some (especially those who have never used a depot insulin) seem to think.

I've used both Lantus and Levemir and rarely shot on a perfect 12/12 schedule. In fact, I usually shot Levemir on an 13/11 schedule (or worse) and Alex did very, very well... better than most when she wasn't sick. The links to her spreadsheets can be found in my signature.

Personally, I think Levemir is a bit more flexible than Lantus, but that's just a personal opinion.

Good luck with whatever decision you make...

Thank you Jill. I am one of those that leaves work a few minutes early and drives too fast to get home so that I will be within 5 min of exactly 12/12 shooting. That makes me feel like I have a little bit of leeway.

You're welcome.

Sometimes I think we become a bit overzealous when offering suggestions and advice. A couple years ago another member told me she and her husband would rush home, draw the syringe, and then sit and wait til the clock struck the 12th hour exactly before they would test and shoot. There's nothing "magical" about shooting every 12 hours on the dot!

Please drive home safely. Better to give a late shot than not make it home at all!

Thanks guys!

I'll discuss with whoever I find for Gordys new vet and see what we can do.

I like my vet office; its a multiple vet one... but I'd feel weird asking someone else to take the one treating Gord place... I am hopefully moving soon, so I am going to look at places closer to the new house.

I feel bad for my little man. :(
