I'm sorry if this isn't where I am supposed to post. I'm on my phone and can't find tabs I remember.
We are long time Lantus (pen) insulin users for our kitty--now age 16. We regularly test everything at the vet--on thyroid MEDS, sub Q fluids, and insulin for several years with great results. We've only increased from .5 am and pm on the Lantus to 1 unit am and pm in the last 4 years.
About a month ago, Jinglebells started having side weakness on her left, would recover in 2 days and then about 2 more days, we would notice it hit on the right side, then it would go back to the left, etc. Always more on the left though. We had major blood panels done at her routine check up and her specialist said he wasn't sure what it was.
A week later, she got a UTI (probs from the stress). We had some leftover Zenequin so started her on that until we could call dr on Monday. He refilled the Zenequin and everything went pretty well, although the weakness was still there. Then it started to get way worse. It looked like stroke. I called the specialist and asked if we shouldn't get her blood pressure checked. He said, "Good idea." Took her in, waited a long time = stressed. Came out with a BP of 200 and more meds--now on blood pressure pills. She's really sensitive to MEDS, so I wasn't thrilled with the latest addition.
BP Meds take some time to work, so the weakness got worse and we started noticing that she would pee wherever she was laying and then her weakness was worse. Seizure? Stroke? We were reading everything. My daughter captured on video what we think is a stroke, so when she wasn't recovering last week, we took her to the neurologist. Of course, she was just starting to improve and only showed her "drunk walk" to the neurologist and did well on every other test. Her best guess is a brain tumor, but we decided a $1,700 MRI and $8,000 brain surgery isn't in Jingle's best interest due to all of her other medical issues. She recommended Keppra--safe drug she said. We started her on that, although my gut wasn't happy about it.
After one dose (by the way 1/3 of the strength they would normally give to a cat cuz she is so hyper-sensitive to MEDS), we noticed that she was so sensitive to the touch when we gave fluids. Now here's the thing...for years we have been telling the vets that her neck has a weird sensitivity to it. During bad periods, she would literally scratch it so compulsively that she would fall backwards off stuff at times. We can't ever scratch her under there like a normal cat. No one vet--not evenneurologist-can tell us what it is. We think allergy of some sort, but not a normal allergy. So, now...her entire body is like herneck. Ughhh! She has also recently thrown up her food (like in the old days before we knew she was diabetic) and her thirst over the last month has increased. Yet...fructosime and her BG were spot on just 1 month ago. Last night, she was so sensitive that she couldn't even touch her fur to the bedsheets without trying to scratch which she can't do because she is basically paralyzed on her left side. And...guess what? Her trying to scratch almost looked like the seizure episode. So...did we mistake a quantum itch for a seizure????
We want to take her off the Keppra today...she's only had 2 1/2 doses--threw up most of the BP and Keppra and thyroid pill--so I don't think we need to taper. We know we need to prick herand do a home BG, but she beyond hates it, it hurts her whole body, and Traumatizes us.
Anyone ever had anything like this? I'm wondering now if it is just too high of BG, too low of BG (although we saw her at a BG OF 12 when vet messed up and she didn't act like this). We are beyond exhausted--not sleeping so we can take care of her like placing in litter pan and feeding every 2 1/2 hours...yes, that's her signature schedule or glucose gets out of whack.
In one month life has gone downhill fast and vets seem to be making it worse. We are open to any ideas from any owners with similar experiences.
Please repost on the right forum if I didn't do it right. Thank you!
My response was
What about food allergies? Have you tried novel protein food? Have you seen a cardiologist? An echo can be done to see what the heart is doing.
Biggest question, are you home testing? Signs of drunkenness can be hypoglycemic episode. If untreated it can show neurological symptoms and if it happens to often and to long permanent brain injury not to mention it can be fatal.
Do not rely on fructosime, it's only an average reading over previous weeks. You need to know at the time of symptoms what the glucose is.
