My cat Gouda has had diabetes for 2 years. I'm new to home testing. This morning he got 4 units of novolin NPH which was too much, he was low in the afternoon. So the vet and I decided to go back to 3. I tested him and he's 235 on the relion confirm. My first test before a dose. Plus he's not eating tonight. Skip it?

Without more information and data is is impossible to suggest a dose. If you are just starting home testing and Gouda's numbers are much lower than they have been you might consider skipping tonight and starting a good home testing program, with a test before each shot and then again at +2 or +3 hours after the shot to see how the insulin is working. Novolin N is a faster acting, harsher insulin than the long acting types and often does not give a full 12 hours duration with many kitties.

When doing preshot tests, make sure your kitty has not had any food for at least 2 hours before the test. After testing give some food about 1/2 hour before giving the shot, since Novolin starts working much faster than some insulins and it is good to make sure your kitty WILL eat and have some food on board before the shot.

If you want to get more attention and more input with your questions you can post on the Health forum here:

There is more "traffic" there so you should get more answers to your question(s)

Also setting up a spreadsheet will help tremendously with seeing how well the dose is working. Information on setting up a spreadsheet is here:

If you have any trouble setting it up just ask and one of the "spreadsheet gurus" can help you get it set up quickly.

Hello everyone. Sorry I'm still getting the hang of this page and everything else. I did dose that night. But now I've in the last almost two weeks my Gouda and I have made BIG changes. We finally switched to only wet food and I now test at least 3 times a day. He's been steady at only .3 not 3 but point 3(.3) since making the switch just a week and a half ago!!! Things are looking up!
