Happy Birthday to your Dad! One of Doodles vets suggested the Chicken Liver thing too and it's great Max loved it! @Woodsywife started giving Smokey gizzards and other organs before going to a homemade diet. It's worked well for him. Eat your fuds Max and don't forget to poop please. Always vines and prayers Elise. :bighug::bighug:

@tiffmaxee I started giving bone broth when his appetite was off. He loves it and will eat any food that has it. Then I started gizzards an liver once a week. I wanted to see if he would like homemade cooked and how much work was involved. You do have to be careful with liver. It can cause vitamin A toxicity. I think the suggested amount is 5% of total diet and only given once a week.

I made a batch of gizzards, hearts and liver before I looked into it. So the ratio is off. I made little eggs of the cooked stuff by freezing it in foam egg carton. He gets half an egg every Saturday and loves it.

One day I opened up one of his canned food and noticed the color was off and it smelled really fishy. Company changed formula. 2 of my cats won't eat it now. Decided to go homemade cooked route. Funny thing is only Smokey will eat it. It's been 3 weeks now. Once cooking is done it takes 30 minutes to prepare it (I puree it) and portion out. I have beef, turkey, chicken in rotation.

@Woodsywife I'm just going to give him half a chicken liver twice a week. He just got a small amount yesterday because it was a very small one. When I was counting how many in a pound for a friend I saw how they were all different sizes. I'm just giving it for the iron as I'm scared he might be on his way to anemia with a creatinine if 5.6. That's why I've added the B vitamins as well. Liver is super high phos as well so it will just be a small amount. Thanks.

I gently cooked it in canola oil. I'm not much of a cook and hate liver so wasn't sure tge best way. I won't go the raw route with a 19 year old who has only eaten cat food until he got sick with pancreatitis and I added freeze dried. I cooked ground turkey for myself and gave him a taste recently and he liked it as well.

I thought I would be leaving in a few minutes. I guess the depot needs to drain. I just fed him some Neo with a little hc.

As usual, Max has excellent timing!:D I'm glad he likes the liver. Have you tried poaching it? I used to do that with gizzards. Right now I'm afraid of anything with phosphorus, though I guess you could add binder.

Happy birthday DD. :bighug:

I'm not happy about the phos but I'm using binder and I'm more worried about what I will do if he becomes anemic and needs epogen since he already has high bp. Jarrow's is a problem now too because it contains phos. It's reformulated. I've asked on the ckd list twice about this but so far nobody has responded.

BTW I've been gun shy and haven't tired to take his bp at home yet. I need to watch the videos over and over. He hasn't been feeling well so I didn't want to bug him because if will likely take me some time to figure it out.

I'm so glad that Max has taken to the chicken liver. After all, who doesn't like chicken liver? (well, re-reading the above, I see that you don't!!:)). Keep on eatin' yer fuds, Max!
Thinking of you and your mom on your dad's birthday. I hope you will have a nice remembrance.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Max was under the bed when I got back. He hadn't touched the spoonful of Wellness I left him. I didn't puck it up and when I went to get him for PMPS it was gone. So his BG might be a little food influenced.

Ewwww.....liver!! Never could stand the smell of it but I'm not a cat either!!

Glad to hear Max likes it though and hope it's just enough to boost his iron levels!

I'm sure your dad is looking down on you and so very proud of his daughter! You're an amazing bean, Elise!!

Surf safely tonight Max!

Cats can safely have about 100grams or 3 1/2 oz a week of liver.
Raw liver is lower in phosphorus than cooked but is hard to handle.
I lightly boil a batch of chicken livers until the liver outside is sealed, but rawish inside, then I cut them up into pieces about 5 or 6 grams each and give one to Sheba every day in her food. She loves it. I freeze it on a flat surface then when frozen, transfer to zip top plastic bag. I do the same with chicken hearts but I give them raw.
Vines to Max.:bighug:

I hope Max perks up Elise... have you given epogen before?
I have used it with 2 of mine.....
I am thinking to give the liver to the boys too--maybe I will get some tomorrow although they hate my cooking.

Hi Jayla. I gave used epogen in the past. Right now Max isn't anemic but it's a real possibility if his creatinine remains so high. I'm hoping what I'm doing will prevent it.

He is eating enough with the ondansetron. I'm thinking of skipping it in the morning to see if he still needs it.

I'm with you on the liver, Elise, and non of my cats cared for it, either. I tried the liver shake when Minka was not eating, and it made her throw up. I couldn't blame her! I'm glad Max likes it. I hope it helps keep the anemia at bay. Harvey was anemic when he was in the hospital and had to have a transfusion.

Sending appy vines for Max and the usual vines, prayers and hugs for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
