Vent - Broken Vial

I'm so annoyed right now.

My fiance offered to get up and give Casper his injection this morning while I showered. I told him not to - just to take it out of the fridge to warm up. I like to keep things consistent; I do mornings and he does the night injection.

Well, he went and injected him anyway, and after he shot, he dropped a brand new vial on the tile floor. $60 down the drain. I had started it literally yesterday.

Now I have to run to the vet, who doesn't open until 8:00am (he doesn't drive). This will make me late for work, but I have to do it as it's either that or leave work early. I have a very long commute which is frequently prone to delays so it's better I go in the morning. I have the old vial which hasn't expired yet but was open for 2 months (Vetsulin) which was the end good use according to the Vet and others. I hate having to use "pet emergency" as a late excuse. It sounds so lame.

My fiance tends to be "out of it" when he first wakes up, hence one of the main reasons I do it mornings (he does evenings usually).

Trying hard not to be totally angry since that serves no purpose but obviously I'm pretty peeved.

In good news, Casper has been declared stable at 3 units twice a day. He had a BGC done yesterday and it was pretty much perfect. We bring him back in 2 months now, instead of 1. we do see a difference in his behavior, and water consumption is down. Very pleased on that front.

Thanks so much!
I just needed to put it down somewhere that my fiance wouldn't find it LOL. I'm pretty sure he isn't aware of this website!

My DH did mornings (I'm not a morning person) and I did evenings. It worked well for us.

I did that mad dash to the vet once. Not fun. (This was before my friendly neighbourhood pharmacist told me I could buy from him much cheaper.) I took out a brand new vial out of the fridge and it was cracked! Crazy drive out into the country minutes before the vet closed for the weekend. Turned out that the vet had dropped the vial on the floor and didn't check it.

Glad everything worked out.

So sorry to hear about the dropped vial! Don't be too hard on your fiancé. It happens. I know you don't think so today, but in the long run you're lucky he'll help. LOL!

One thing that may help is to wrap a few rubber bands around the vial. The rubber bands make it less likely to slip out of one's hands.

And in case it does drop, they make little "jackets" for vials out of the material that they use to make scuba wet suits or mouse pads (don't know what it is called), but you can also fashion one out of bubble wrap and packing tape or rubber bands. It's cheap insurance.

It happens. I think we've all done it.

Best,
Sandi.

Or use an empty pill bottle. Wrap the vial with a paper towel or cotton balls so it sits snugly in the bottle. Then all you have to do it take the top off to draw out the insulin. That saved many vials for me.

What a fantastic idea. I will absolutely mention this to him! He's more butter fingers than I am LOL :D
