Ringo is his name-o

Member Since 2016
Hi there.
I'm Michele. Ringo and John (litter mates) and Ms. YANKEES hoooman and Sammi and Sabrina's mom.
We love in NY.
Ringo was diagnosed in July. Since then I have been (bare with me with the lingo I'm learning) blindly shooting.
I got a home test kit last week and I'm getting better at it.
I think I should do a curve or whatever u called it but his poor ear is already on fire from my horrible poking.
This is his situation :
Ringo was diagnosed in July just before I was due to leave town for a month. My hubby had to care for him. So for a few weeks he was under my care the vet made me feel like this would be an easy situation. We brought him in for weekly testing as I was told. His numbers were high. Dosage increase. Well while I was away and a friend was assisting with the evening shots and vet visits the dosage increased. When I returned the dosage increased. And now again. He is 13 lbs with 6u in the pm and 5 u at am. He is taking vetsulin. Eating glycobalance wet food twice a day and a little hills sensative stomach -that's what his brother and sister eats-

I just figured out how to get blood for home testing.

He got feed and had his shot of 6u at 945. I tested him on a relion at 1045 and his numbers were 537.

Now forgive me but I know that's high but how does it relate to cat/humane numbers.

Does this possibly mean he is insulin resistant.

Someone suggested dosages in a 8 hr window instead of the 12.

Should I change to a different med?

Is there a better food for him?
Do I do a curve thing?

What am I doing wrong. I want my furbaby healthy again .

Help and thank you...

Does this possibly mean he is insulin resistant.
You did not provide enough information.
The BG of 537 was only one hour after the shot and it is not unusual for the BG to be higher at +1 that it was before shot. However, you did not provide a BG before that shot so we can't tell what is happening.
How was the 6/5 unit does arrived at?
That is a high dose.

Most of use here record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

The spreadsheet allow others to better be able to make suggestions

It might be easier on Ringo's ears if you put Neosporin on his ears before you poke him. If he is resistant to testing, you can wrap him up in a big towel like a kitty burrito, You can poke him on the bottom of his paws. I give my Callie treats before testing. She loves some extra loves, brushing or freeze dried chicken. You can look at some of the videos on You Tube. Once you can test, all it takes to do a curve is to test every two hours from t e morning test to the evening test. I like to write down the test results and then take some graph paper to chart out the curve.

We have a nifty spread sheet here that will let us see how Ringo is doing so we can help you help Ringo.

Read as much as possible here so you can learn how to do the sugar dance. The more you learn, the easier it is to make decisions as what you want to do and how to make it work for your schedule. Don't let anyone tell you what meter to use or what insulin you have to use. Every cat is different and what works for one family might not work for another. Welcome to our board. There are lots of helpful people.

That is a high reading and a REALLY high dose. You definitely should do a curve (testing every two hours for 12 hours) so we can see how far he drops at the lowest.

Diet.... No dry at all... The only dry I would recommend is called Young Again Zero carb food. I can't say enough good things about it.

A relatively inexpensive good wet food is fancy feast classic pate. No gravy foods.

Thank you for asking. His numbers were still so high even with the diet change. I spoke with a friend who managed to get her guy in remission. She had some good suggestions. First was find a new vet. Lol. So I did. He is great. We changed him to lantus a few days ago. I'm home testing still his numbers are in the 250-350 area still but I'm gonna go back next week to see how he wants to proceed

Great to get an update from you and good to know you've been successful in finding a better vet.

There is a very active Lantus support group here. There is a wealth of information on Lantus in the stickies at the top of their sub-forum board. In case you haven't already found it, here's a link directly to the board:

Be sure to let us know how things are going. You know where we are whenever you need any help.

Glad to hear from you. Lantus has to be a depot and it can take a few days. Read the informational stickies in the Lantus section to learn how it works.

What dose are you giving now? Keep in mind when you see the doctor, dose is raised at 0.25u at a time.

Let us know what happens.
