Bobby just got back on Insulin a mth ago. His number were high until a few days ago. When I switched him back to ff. I checked him before I gave insulin. He was 15.7 he had his food at same time. Checked two hours later he was 2.9. Gave some syrup he then was 3.3. Then gave him some of his old food that is high carb. What do I do for insulin? Testing etc. Vet said we may have to lower his insulin. Which I fully agree. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pre shot 15.7
Gave 5 u lantus Insulin
Tested 2 hrs later was 2.9
Gave some syrup tested 30 minutes later was 3.3
Gave some high carb food test 30 minutes later was 4.0

Hi Jessica, glad you made it over to here!

I think Bobby is on Lantus?
And he was 15.7 at preshot, and 2.9 two hours later.
And you gave syrup after which he rose to 3.3.

How much insulin did you give?
Are you going to be around to take care of Bobby today?

Eliz

Bobby is on lantus and 5 units in am and 4 in pm. He was very hard to regulate at first. But he may need his dose decreased. I will b home all day to test

I know you've given glucose syrup.
How long ago was that?

What high carb foods do you have available?

This is a very steep drop so low in the cycle, and Lantus can continue to drop the BG for a long time.
If it is necessary, do you have the details of a vet that you can take your cat to?
.

That's a lot of insulin, so when that kicks in, you may have a big drop. A dose decrease is definitely in order. Going to the low carb FF certainly made a difference!

Yes. We have an emergency vet.

5u has is a huge depot to manage and like said above can stay in your kitties system a long time Keep testing every 30 min and if needed use honey, and HC wet food. You don't have a spreadsheet set up so it's hard to help and I don't understand the metric numbers. When you remove dry they can drop very fast.

What is hc wet food

Hi - waving at you from across the Rockies (BC coast). You'll want some high carb wet food. If you can find some Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers, there is lots of gravy. That's where the carbs are. But you can add honey, corn syrup or other syrup to regular food to make it high carb.

How long ago since you last tested? Carbs can wear off and the numbers drop back again, so you'll want to keep testing frequently. Don't leave now to shop unless you can be done in back in 30 minutes.

Also, to make things easier, can you edit your original post here and add in a running BG so people can see it in one look? You can just copy this to start and then add as the day goes on.

Add the US numbers, as well (multiply by 18) so you can get feedback from our American members.

Get some wet food, but don't overdo food right now until you see if he's going up. You don't want him full and refusing to eat if he drops again!

AM PS : 15.7 (283 US)
gave 5u Lantus/ fed FF
+2 : 2.9 (52 US)/ gave syrup, dry food
+2.5 : 3.3 (59 US)

Sorry guys very hard to keep up with all the replies. I appreciate it immensely tho. I am still confused on how to write that chart I'll try my way see it makes sense to u guys

Jessica, is there any update? ...The insulin hasn't really started to kick in. You may well need to get your kitty to a vet to get him on a glucose drip. ...Please update us with the situation whenever you can...

Called the vet. Was told what to do. Do u know what the peak time in for lantus. Like how many hours after it given it it most effective?

I just read this, how scary I hope there's an update soon!

Maybe she's on her way to the vets.

Last post I saw was on FB an hour ago and Bobby was back to 2.9. I don't know what the times are from shot until the last reading she reported.

ETA I hope she understands how critical it is to be testing every 20 minutes.

So sorry guys. Bobby is at 9.6 right now I'm at hospital I ripped open my incision on hand from surgery on Tuesday. He is good right now but keep checking his numbers. He has stayed at 9.6 for a bit now

Thank you for the update. Glad to hear Bobby is in safe numbers, but so sorry to hear that you have torn open your incision. :bighug::bighug:

So glad you got some good help here and got Bobby into safe numbers again .... well done Jessica!

Sorry about your hand!

Oh dear you have been through the mill today ......

Time to take a deep breath and to relax a bit now (:

Paws crossed for Bobby (and you) today, looks like it will be a long one for you both :bighug: You'll be fine!

ETA: I just looked at the time and it looks like your day is almost over, darn this time-difference thing, always confuses me haha

Hi Jessica @Jessica2085 , I hope you have recovered from your difficult day yesterday.
(And I hope your hand will soon be better :bighug: :bighug::bighug:)

Just so that we're 'up to speed' with what happened yesterday, can you tell us what advice your vet gave you to raise the blood glucose? (Just so that we know what's in your cat's system).

Clearly the insulin dose is way too high. And I'm presuming your vet has recommended a significant dose reduction?

The blood glucose numbers do actually look a bit odd to me, because the drop in levels was so huge in such a short time and very early in the cycle (not something you expect to see with Lantus:

I do wonder if the AMPS reading was a faulty one? Wonky readings certainly do happen on occasion. What was your cat's PMPS the previous evening? And did you take any other BG tests after that one? ...Just trying to piece together the picture....

And have you significantly reduced the carb content of your cat's diet recently?

Eliz

Jessica, sometimes you can get a bad strip that will give a strange number. I have learned to take another test just to check that the strip is ok. I do that anytime I get an unexpected number.
