So DH & I have decided that we want to give another sugar kitty a chance at a good life. We've found a kitty that needs a home ASAP (she's posted on the DCIN Facebook page) so she can start treatment for her diabetes. I've been in contact with her owner & she reports that although she has not yet started treatment with insulin she has switched to low carb wet food only.

My question is apparently Tutz the kitty we are looking at adopting gets anxious in the car. Tutz will be travelling from Ontario to BC at some point if everything goes ahead with the adoption. Can someone suggest something that Tutz could take to help keep her calm for the long trip?

Tutz is only 3 years old & according to her owner her blood sugar was 25 a couple of weeks ago when she had her latest blood test done which was down from 37!

Also any suggestions on how to acclimate Tutz to a new home with other kitties would be appreciated.

DH & I are still so very sad with the loss of vegetable but after many many hours of discussions we decided in vegetables memory we wanted to help give another sugar kitty a chance at life.

that is so so so awesome of you. what sacrifice. I've heard smaller carriers are more comforting when a cat is upset, and cover it with a towel. a familiar sent (blanket or towel) with her could help as well. Introduce new cats slowly... letting them sniff under a closed door... exchanging scents so they get used to each other.

best wishes

That's so wonderful of you!!! I agree....after China goes, when I'm ready to adopt, it'll be another sugarcat....why waste all this knowledge?

When the new kitty gets home, keep it in a separate room and rub it good with a towel (especially around the face where the scent glands are) and put the towels around the house for your other cats to smell.....then start to "site swap"...put your home cats into the room and let the new one out in the main part of the house

Next, a baby gate or fixing the door so there's only a tiny crack (so everyone can see each other but not get to each other) until everyone seems to be accepting

What a wonderful tribute to Vegetable :bighug: :bighug:

Ask your vet about some sedatives for Tutz. That is a long trip so I don't know what might work best and how many times you would have to give it. Many, many years ago I had to take my kitties at that time about 6 hours away when I moved and the vet gave me some sort of sedative...sorry don't have the name, since it was so long ago...and they mainly slept the entire way.

Good luck with your adoption.

Torbitrol may be a option for a mild sedative.... I have had good luck with it for my seniors (you may have to dose a few times for 6 hours)
Congratulations !!
I know Vegetable is smiling on you:cat:

WOOT WOOT! So YOU're getting Tutz! <3 Yard Dance!!! HUGS and HUGS!!

With that long of a ride, I would consider a gentle sedative. Just my opinion only but I don't think one of the pheromones such as Feliway or Rescue Remedy would be enough to keep him calm that long.

THANKS for guiding them to Tutz beautiful Miss Vegetable - you're a sweet Angel. <3

Things are in the works but yes I think we're going to get Tutz.

I've been in contact with her current owner & suggested she talk to her vet about some kind of sedative for Tutz on her long journey. All we need to do now is figure out the transportation from Toronto to Vancouver.

Tutz sounds like an awesome little cat. She's so tiny weighing in at 4.9lbs at 3 years old.

It's a bittersweet time right now. We're grieving the loss of sweet vegetable but are getting excited to adopt a new sweet kitty that really needs to start treatment. Tutz had her blood sugar checked at the vet a couple weeks ago & she was at 25 which was down from 37! Tutz is just a baby still & we are going to work hard to get her into remission.

I completely understand that bittersweet feeling...it will settle once you start to bond with your new kitty.
This is exactly what Vegetable would want you to do.
Wishing you the very best.

Diana

That is a great thing you are doing Jennifer, saving another kitty in need. Tutz is small! Wow, only 5 pounds. I bet you guys will have a lot of fun with the new family member, and also knowing that you are keeping another little life alive.

Looks like things are starting to happen!

Tutz will be driving from Toronto to Detroit then flying from Detroit to Seattle where we will go & meet her to bring her home to our place in BC.

Not sure of the dates or times yet but it's a start.

I'm nervous & excited all at once. It's so soon after Veg is gone on one hand I feel guilty about being happy to adopt another sugar kitty but on the other hand I'm excited to help Tutz & bond with her. I know it's the right decision it's just all happening so fast. It was DH's idea to adopt so soon & once we saw Tutz & read her story, she already made a spot in our heart that is still in pieces.

I've been talking to her current owner & we've decided that we're going to keep in touch & im going to send her lots of updates & pictures. Tutz's owner is in the military & her schedule makes it next to impossible to care for a diabetic cat.

I'll update more when I find out more details.

I'm excited for you. Tutz is a petite gorgeous kitty. I'm sure her owner will be relieved to know she's in good hands. Can't wait for the pics.

I am So excited, happy, in awe..too many emotions to even list for and of you. That you are adopting another Sugar cat is such an incredible gift. I would lay bets on the fact that Veg had something to do with this from his place in the stars! I'm sure she is smiling!
I use Bachs Rescue a Remedy pet drops when any of my cats have to go anywhere in the car. Gussie hyperventilates badly. The tech at our vets introduced me to them. Putting one drop on the outside of each ear worked magic for both Gus and my civvies.
So happy for you!! And so happy for the lucky new Sugar Cat!

Things are starting to happen. DCIN is working on arranging transport for Tutz. So far I think the plan is to drive her from Toronto to Detroit then fly her from Detroit to Seattle where we will meet her and bring her back to BC to her new home. We're still waiting for dates but as of this morning it sounds like Tutz may be flying in the cabin with a petscort.

I'm very nervous yet excited and sad all in one with our decision to give Tutz a new home. I so miss vegetable, it's just not the same without her around yet I am happy we can give another sugar kitty a chance at life. I think until Tutz is actually at home with us I'm going to be a nervous wreck! I'm trying to think of all the things I can and need to do to make Tutz feel welcome. I created her spreadhseet today, lantus is ready for her first shot, I'm going to run out and pick up some treats and some syringes today, testing kit is ready and I'm sure there are a million other things to do that I'm forgetting so if anyone has any suggestions let me know. Oh I know, I have to run to the pet store and pick up my gift card so I can stock up on cat food for Tutz, apparently she likes to eat friskies.

I'm happy to report Tutz will be arriving in Vancouver September 24th in the evening! I'm excited yet nervous to meet her. I have all these things going through my head like what if she doesn't like me or do I have enough room in my heart to love her as much as I loved vegetable and will she be happy with us. I'm finding that I have to keep telling myself to just breath allot.

Congrats on your new fur baby! I think we all deal with those guilty feelings and doubt about adopting another four footed friend when we are still dealing with a loss but I also firmly believe that you found Tutz because Vegetable wanted you to. If Vegetable could you send you a message, I'm sure it would be that she'd want you to share the wonderful love and care you gave her with another sugar kitty! This is just the start of yet another long love story!

What a great thing you are doing - a new adoption. Tutz will be a great kitty, I just know it.

Of course she will love you. If will be love at first site for all of you. Breathe and shop for arrival of new baby.
