Hi,
Just started ProZinc, my kitty also had dental surgery. Can't keep the food down. Won't eat, I am force feeding then in an hour she throws up.
Help!

Poor kitty. I would think after an hour in the stomach SOME of it is digested. when was the dental surgery?

Can you give her 1/4th of 10mg Pepcid? The 'regular' strength, not 'Max Strength'. She may have an upset stomach. This is likely at least a call to the vet....keep syringe feeding and test more often.

This vet is marginal, I live in the country and she is an hour and 1/2 away. Jammie is just barely hanging in and the stress of going back is not an option.
I will try the pepsid. The surgery was yesterday.

Please at least call your vet and see if she has any suggestions! Is she the one who did the dental surgery? Are you home testing kitty's blood glucose?

Have you contacted your vet?
The prescription drug Cerinia is good to help prevent vomiting.

As Larry said Cerenia is an excellent medication for nausea and vomiting. Your vet could prepare some prefilled syringes and they would be given the same way you give insulin. You could ask your vet to do that without having to take your kitty back, since the vet would know what is happening

If she is continuing to do poorly then please call your vet. Even though it may be stressful to take her back if it is something serious it could be the best thing to do :bighug: :bighug:

Morning,
Thank you for the concern. My vet never called back... so I was able to get 2-3 TBS. of food down last night and this morning. Still trying to decide to give clyndomycin that might upset her stomach but provide antibiotic support.
She is only urinating once a day. I cheered to see it this morning. Very weak the BG was 179 at am check.
This message board is a lifesaver. Thank you all! in tears

I am awaiting the biopsy report, I suspect cancer... I should get a call today.
Thank you again for your kind support.

Yes, hoping for good news on the biopsy. Cats (and people) can live for awhile without food. But water is essential. If kitty is not eating, maybe you could make chicken flavored broth.

Cats (and people) can live for awhile without food.
Actually, cats can very rapidly develop hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) when they don't eat, or don't eat enough. This can be fatal if not treated quickly. Lack of food will also change how insulin works and can make a cat's ususal dose be too much.

MJ, please continue trying to assist feed your sweet kitty until you hear from the vet and get her input! If you haven't heard from her yet, I would suggest calling her again.

I don't know if this would help but here is a recipe for a liver shake that everybody swears by:

You can also try making a bone broth with chicken or beef; chicken is probably easier to digest. Just simmer some chicken with the bones in - I used a crock pot and let it simmer for a few hours - then strain the broth off (don't add any seasonings like salt, garlic or onion!). You can freeze it, and you can also try tempting kitty to eat with some bits of the chicken (minus the bones).

Sending prayers and healing vines! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Food is important for kitties, as Squalliesmom said, a kitty should not be allowed to go any length of time without food or fatty liver will develop. If your kitty is still not eating and you cannot get enough food in by syringing going back to the vet would be the wisest choice.

Hi all lovely friends of support. I finally got through to the vet. She gave me sub cutaneous fluids to give to Jammie. Yes the biopsy is cancer.
Jammie has rallied some.. Still having some difficulty eating but the potty box is being used.
This vet does not believe human glucometers are accurate for cats. I just got a second glucometer. Alpha Trac and it is about 100 pts higher than my original upon readings. I am following the tight regulation but scared with the limited food intake. Any thoughts or experience?

I am so sorry the results of the biopsy didn't bring you better news. Is it treatable in any way?

A lot of us have vets who don't think human meters are accurate for cats. They are not inaccurate, they just use a different scale. Your AlphaTrak will not always be 100 points higher than a human meter, the difference between them will change as the blood glucose numbers change. Many of us prefer our human meters because they are much more cost-effective, and the test strips are much more readily available. As long as you use the proper scale for the meter and don't try to draw comparisons between the two types, the human meters are fine.

I am not a ProZinc user so I can't really give you dosing advice, but you are right to be concerned about giving insulin if your kitty is not eating. Is Jammie eating at all? Has her vet given her anything for pain, or for nausea or inappetence? I am assuming her problem with eating is mostly mouth pain from the dental and the biopsy - is this correct?

We have a spreadsheet we use to chart our kitties' blood glucose, and it would be great if you could also use it to track Jammie's numbers. It's a wonderful tool to help you see patterns and trends in her progress, and it's a great help to us to be able to go over it if you have a problem and need some help. You can also enter information about food, meds, etc. Feel free to take a look at mine if you want to see an example; some are more detailed than mine, some less. Just click on my signature at the bottom where it says "Squallie's Spreadsheet" in blue letters. Here is the link to the SS if you'd like to use it:

If you need help setting it up (I did!) just sing out and someone will give you a hand.

If you are having dosage questions you will probably get more answers if you post on the ProZinc forum, folks there have more experience with it. :):bighug:

Thank you! I will do just what you suggest. And use your spread sheet.
My conundrum is to make her comfortable yet try to get some of that pistol cat back. She has an appetite yet when she starts to eat she fights her mouth. So I let her eat what she can then step in. She is feeling better to start to push back. She is only interested in a fish no grain Weruva can food.
The cancer has spread to the sinus area, and lower jaw lymph nodes, all happened in 6 months. I decided to not treat which chemo. Only pain meds then the hard decision.

I'm so sorry to hear that Jammie's cancer has spread. If she's trying to eat, I would keep offering her the Weruva , if that's the only food she's interested in. Glad you have pain meds to keep her comfortable. Sending prayers and healing light. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Dear Squalliesmom,
Thank you, Thank you for alllllll of your support. I do not feel so isolated and better informed thanks to you and the others. It is hard to maintain balance when you love them so much.
She seems to be rallying, i.e. she chased and caught a rabbit this morning! I live obviously on a farm.
Warmest regards to all,
MJ

That's great news. She seems to be recovering pretty well in order to be able to catch a rabbit.

You are very welcome, MJ! It's amazing how such a small animal can wrap itself so tightly around your heart, isn't it? Just know that you're never alone, you have all of FDMB beside you! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Caught a rabbit?!? That's wonderful! My guys would probably be scared to death of a rabbit; my son has a rabbit and the kitties want to check him out but when he moves they flee, lol!

MJ, now that it's not an emergency situation any more, could I get you to please take down the 911 prefix? It tends to make our hearts jump a little bit when we see a 911, lol!

Hi,
I would happily take the 911 prefix down. I can't seem to find how to do it?
That's okay, lol, looks like someone already did it for you! :) For future reference, should you need to know, there is a small box at the bottom right of your post that says Thread Tools. If you hover your mouse over it you will get a drop-down box that offers you the option Edit Thread. Click on that and it will bring up a black box with your thread title in it; at the beginning of it, after the word Thread, is a section that allows you to edit the prefix. Hover over that and it will give you the options for No Prefix, or other prefixes. It sounds so much more complicated when I type all this out than it really is, lol!

Hope Jammie is doing well today! :bighug::bighug::bighug:
