I posted the other day about my Katie- the post is here, please read first- http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/back-after-3-years.162235/

At the traumatic vet visit yesterday, her glucose was 260, which I didnt think was too bad, considering the amount of stress she was under.

Her fructosamine result was 463. Indicating her sugar has been running high for a while, but only recently high enough to spill into her urine when I discovered it. Again she has been OTJ for 3 years.
I cannot do blood testing, only urine. Please see the previous post I mentioned and I explained why.
She went from no glucose in urine, not even a trace, to highest level the urine strip shows literally overnight. Since Saturday every urine test has been the same way, very high (brown on the strip).

Rest of bloodwork was okay. Her teeth do need cleaned, which is scheduled for next Tuesday. She is on Zeniquin once a day until then. She is ultra sensitive to antibiotics, most causing vomiting or diarrhea, and although Zeniquin is not for ideal for a pre-dental antibiotic, this is one she can take.

Vet said no insulin for now. Which I agree, until the antibiotics are done and her dental is done, to see if her glucose comes down on it's own.
What do you think?
I am just worried about DKA without insulin. She is always asking for food early, etc, but she has always been like that, she is a little pig. She has lost about a 1/3 lb in the last few months. Do you think I should increase her food slightly?

Any thoughts, opinions are appreciated.
But please dont beat me up about the blood testing. I have tried. Katie is just too aggressive. She bit me for the first time a couple weeks ago when I tried to help her get her nail free from a a snag. A real ferocious bite, requiring antibiotics. Yesterday when we got back from the vet, she walked around hissing at nothing, swinging her tail, panting, hyperventilating, and when she spotted me 10 feet away she ran at me growling and hissing, trying to attack me (which is another first). I am sure it looked hilarious, a grown woman running scared from a little kitty through the house. And if the circumstances weren't so serious, it would have been.

Hi--I am not a expert or 1 of the wise ones--but I did see your post the other day:cat:
I promise not to beat you up but I will encourage you to keep trying especially after the dental and her BG may go right back down.
I would also make sure she needs insulin after the dental-even if the vet has to do a fruc. after a few weeks??

My very humble opinion would be to switch to a low carb food since you are not giving insulin you do not have to worry about hypo-this may lessen the chances of DKA and I agree 260 at the vet is not too extreme.
This way you can give a little more food or some of the freeze dried 0 carb like pure bites chicken- (1 ingredient) There are tons-

Is Zeniquin the same as Azithromycin? Mine cannot take the "dental" AB either--but they do good on Azith-
Lets see what the wise ones say.....:bighug:

Thanks for your reply!
Katie has been on a raw food diet for 9 years. The first 6 years she was on a commercial raw, the last 3 years I have been making it myself. She has fatty blood (hyperlipidemia), always has, so I started making the food myself so I could trim all the fat I could . I replace it with salmon oil, they have to have some fat and fish oil is a good fat and omega3 fatty acids are used to treat hyperlipidemia. About 2-3 months after I started making her food she went OTJ. So I thought that did it, the even lower fat diet was her "cure". I still make the same exact food, so it's about as low carb as you can go. So there is really no food to change to to try unfortunately.

I think Azithromycin is different, and I cant honestly recall if we have ever tried it. But I will try to remember the name if we have to try another antibiotic.

Hey Katiesmom!!....as long as you're urine testing, I'd just get some of the strips that test for ketones as well as glucose....at least that way you can keep an eye on her and see if she starts to develop ketones

Anything more than "trace" means it's an emergency
