Last week's post

Ivana is still rocking life at The Falls, go kitty! :D:D:D Although she's harder to test these days - I guess she's got out of the habit of having her ears fiddled with as much as she used to, and does lots of head flicking and ear flicking these days. Nothing that the smell of treats won't fix though ;)

Last week's post was a vet visit, and in the few days after that I was liaising with Ivana's vet about some possible things to try to help with the nighttime yowling issue which has been going on for a while (nightlights didn't help). We came up with coconut oil (for cognitive function) and chamomile tea (for relaxation). So now Missy is getting 1/2t of coconut oil daily (started with 1/4t and worked up), and 1/2t of brewed chamomile tea before bed. Guess what, it's working! We started this on Monday (it's now Sunday morning here), and she has only yowled once in that time, which was last night - and I think that's because we went out and didn't get home til 1.30am so her routine was out of kilter. So, it looks like we have a winner, very pleased. Although we are really pushing our luck with the number of things we're mixing into her food these days...

The other news is that on Wednesday Ivana started on Calcitriol. She's not a fan of it, that's for sure, but she's had two doses so far and will get another blood test after two weeks of treatment twice-weekly. The vet suggested mixing it into a small snack-sized amount of food and then giving the rest of the meal an hour later, which we have done. But I might actually try just syringing it into her mouth next tine and see if that's easier so that I don't get the "Are you trying to poison me?" look.

Photo of a spoilt kitty-cat getting breakfast in bed this morning, because it was laced with Calcitriol and she would only eat it if she could lay in the sun at the same time.

Gosh, I wish someone had suggested this to me when Cinco was howling his head off at 2:00 am! Glad it's helping!

Wednesday Ivana started on Calcitriol.
I had to look this up. On her Labs tab her calcium looks good. What is the purpose of this supplement?

Well, of course. Her Royal Highness much prepares to have her meals served in the utmost comfort! ;)

When I first read this I thought this was for you!!
Well seeing that Ivana only gets 1/2t of the chamomile tea, I get the rest of it - winners all round!

It's to keep her levels of calcium, phosphorous and potassium in balance, and to (hopefully) slow the progression of the CKD. From my limited research on it, it's a relatively recent treatment for kitties. Apparently it works better the earlier you start it, as a prevention rather than a cure, hence why the vet didn't want to wait til her levels were bad before starting it. However, there is a risk that Ivana's calcium levels could rise too high (Calcitriol is a hormone so is not as predictable), hence the re-testing after two weeks.

I'm glad the coconut oil and chamomile tea are helping.
So are we, a full night's sleep is amazing!

Ahhh. Proactive is always better than reactive. Thanks for the info. Filing it away for possible future use.
