? Relion prime meter

wondering how many people use the relion prime meter? I read reviews on Walmart.com last night that it is not very good. Anything over 600 it just reads hi so I don't really know where Paris is. I did read that this meter reads up 20-40 higher than other meters. I think when these supplies are gone I will get a new meter. Paris has a vet appointment tomorrow so I will try to compare to there's. I have decided on my own since her numbers have been so high And I am home on the weekends I have up'd her to 2 units
 
The Relion meters (Prime and Micro/Confirm) are very popular choices around here. We use the Prime for Jenks.

You're going to have trouble finding a portable meter that reads above 600. The reason is that meters generally lose accuracy and precision as the blood sugar level approaches the upper limit of the meter's range. When the blood glucose is in that range, you're really looking more for patterns than specific numbers, anyway. So blacks changing to reds, reds to magentas, and so on.

If you really need a meter that will give you a number above 600, the informational pamphlet for the pet-specific AlphaTrak2 meter indicates that it will read up to 750mg/dL. But strips for that device can be as expensive as $1.00/each, so it's really up to you if that extra range on the high end is worth the premium over the Prime (17 cents each) and Micro/Confirm (38 cents each) strips.
 
I bought the Relion Confirm because that's what everybody here seemed to suggest. I was looking it up online recently and I, too, noticed all the bad reviews it had. But the way I see it is that I paid $10 for it, and the strips are very cheap as well, so I'll work with it. It gets the job done for me. And as mentioned above, it's not necessarily the exact numbers that matter, so much as the patterns you see. All meters can be off by up to 20%. But if you do decide to get a new meter, the AlphaTrak would probably be your best bet.

If you have the Alphatrack meter, you can use the Freestyle Light strips, They are much less expensive. Be sure you get the Freestyle LIGHT. I accidentally bought different Freestyle strips and they didn't work

I do use the FS Lite strips in my AT2 meter. Just as a caveat if you choose to do this route please do a good number of comparison testing (ideally using the same blood drop) between the AT2 meter/AT2 strip and the AT2 meter/FS Lite strips so that you are comfortable that the results are reliable.

what kind of differences have you found in the readings of the two brands of strips?

I found 4 points difference the one time I tried it. That is less than the 20% difference the government agencies allow.

From MY OWN COMPARISONS I have found about 3-6% variance between AT2 meter/AT2 strips and AT2 meter/FS Lite strips. I did over 50 same blood sample comparisons before I was satisfied with the results. I still use the test solution on every new vial of strips I use to make sure the results fall into the range listed on the AT2 strip container.

I used the last coding number for a cat on the AT2 test strip container that I had and did not change it and left it coded at that. I also use the test control solution for each container of strips I use.

I kept my AT because that's what the vets use. I'm still trying to educate them to what I have learned here. I found the best prices for strips at Amazon.
