Kirby sure is not himself on the insulin. Hoping another type will work better. As soon as he gets the shot...DOWN N OUT! Feeling terrible about this. I feel like I should just stop the insulin. He got exercise yesterday but ate too much grass...grass I'd high in sugar during the day. Ugh..my heart hurts for him.

What type of insulin are you using? Some insulins are harsher than others. Also when a kitty is in higher numbers it can make them less active. When my two are high they do little except eat and sleep...when they are in better numbers they tend to be more active and playful.

It would be good...if possible to get a test before each shot and another...again if possible during the middle of the cycle. This will gibe a better picture on how well the insulin is working for Kirby.

Using PZI...doesn't work very well. Only been in the 100's very few times. Going back to Vet on Friday.

PZI is a good insulin. How old is it...is there any chance that it has lost some of its effectiveness? It should be stored in the fridge..not on the fridge door since opening and closing the door can shake up the container. Also it needs to be rolled gently before use.

As I mentioned before if you could do some more tests at home, where there won't be any stress affecting the numbers it would give a clearer picture of what is happening during the day,

Not for my Kirby...and I do test throughout the day. I need to know since he don't speaka da English..LOL! I keep the PZI in fridge on shelf. Don't shake it. It's new. Gonna keep on trying!! I want my Buddyhead back!!!

That is great that you are testing at home. If you get a chance maybe you could update your spreadsheet. Sometimes seeing the numbers on the coloured spreadsheet shows trends better and it is also useful for your vet to see...you can e-mail them the link. This makes dose adjustments so much easier to decide.

Sometimes it just takes time as well. One of my diabetic kitties has no other health problem but she is proving hard to regulate. It has been 4 months and her numbers are up and down. But in looking back she is still doing better than when I started. Keep at it...you'll get your old Kirby back :bighug:

I have tried to do the spreadsheet...I have a brain injury, and get very confused with that. I can understand things that are very complex to others, yet some things I just cannot grasp no matter how hard I try. One of the other members made one for me and put some of the info in it for me. My neighbor tried to help me...to no avail.
I'm just a pen n paper person and I do log EVERYTHING to do with Kirby. It's only been a little over a month, and I will not give up trying to get his numbers down more. He's mostly in the 250+ range. It's not extremely high...but I'd love to get him to the 100's. Thank you for your care and responses. ;)

The spreadsheet is just a grid for storing the numbers, everything else happens automatically. This post http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/understanding-the-spreadsheet-grid.156606/ explains what to do and how to put the numbers you already have onto the grid. Once you have done that the PZI users can help you with what to do next with Kirby's insulin. If you can't work out how to do it someone can always help you.

It took nearly 2 months for my kitty to start being her normal self after starting insulin, and spent most of those 2 months just lying around with occasional bursts of energy at feeding time. You are doing great!

I know...I just can't grasp it. I try.
Ya..Kirby basically does like you said- just laying around. I try to engage him to play. He's not up to it this morning. Suxx!

Since you are not able to do the spreadsheet you could either have the person who set it up...I am going to assume it was Marje...put some of the numbers in for you, or if you could list some readings over the last week using AMPS ( morning preshot test) and the + hours since shot format such as +4 would be 4 hours since the shot +6 would be 6 hours since the shot..etc then the PMPS (evening preshot test) it would help people here to be able to offer some information or advice on how the treatment is going.

Hi Katie,

Some insulins disagree with some cats. If the insulin in use is not a good match for the kitty it is definitely worth trying a different insulin. For example, Caninsulin really disagreed with Saoirse. She'd be OK for the couple of hours after the injection until the insulin kicked in. She'd then be miserable and hide for the next 8 hours or so but she would brighten up as the dose was wearing off. It was like having two different cats. She would have had no real quality of life on that insulin. When she was switched to Lantus she was much, much happier; I got my cat back.

Definitely talk over insulin choices with your vet. Just because one insulin might not be that great, it doesn't mean that Kirby won't get on better with a different one. Also, ask for input from members here to learn from their experiences.

Hey Katie, I had trouble interpreting how to use the SS at first too. See if this explanation helps; it did me.

AMPS is the AM Pre-shot test (always test before shooting to make sure they're high enough to give insulin)...then the U column is for "Units" (how much you gave)

The +1, +2, +3, etc are for how many hours since shooting...so +2 is 2 hours after the AM shot, +9 is 9 hour after, etc.....Since we're all over the world here, saying "he was at 148 at 8pm" doesn't tell us anything...we need to know how long since his last shot

At the end of a 12 hour cycle, it's PMPS time! (PM Pre-shot) and the whole thing starts over
