I'm kind of freaking out, my 15 year old boy has been on insulin for about three weeks now. 1 unit twice a day for two weeks then the vet said double it, I was worried that was too much so I did 1.5 this past week instead. He's been hanging around in the 100's since then but tested 58 tonight. I even retested but in using the freestyle strips. How long should I wait to give him his shot and should it be a lower dose? Or skip it all together? I have work tomorrow and if I wait too much longer tonight I'm not going to be able to do his morning shot at the 12 hr mark :(

Hello!! Hopefully someone more experienced can give you an answer. What type of insulin is he on? May want to go to that area of forum and post as well as read the sticky notes they have. Also when you post.. used the ? mark option in the header. I learned that recently myself!

So I just started giving my kitty insulin as well. Its confusing!!! I would think (and I am a total newbie) that with that low of a number tonight you may be looking at a skipped dose in evening.. but would still be able to do the morning number depending on the reading...But think it would depend on what type of meter you are using as well as insulin. But from what I understand need to be very careful of hypo. Anyway like I said I am totally new and hopefully someone else chines in! I just wanted to reply as I know when i posted a question it was nice when someone answered with a few ideas.

All the best!!!

Also I found this suggestion when I was asking about some of my kitty's numbers
If you get a Pre-shot test less than 150, we suggest you stall, don't feed and post for help. Make sure your subject line is clear that you're looking for help like "STALLING...NEED HELP!"....someone will help advise you the first few times you shoot a lower number than usual.

Hope someone else responds!!

Thank you for your response! I'm still so new to this, especially this forum. I'm keeping an eye on him tonight and I'll keep testing. So anything below 150 is a danger zone? I thought it was just double digits but I'm not sure! He's on Prozinc insulin with an alpha track monitor using freestyle test strips.

Hello I am using Lantus so not as sure about dosage and what it does.. how long hangs in system.. that sort of thing. Just looked there is a specific board for ProZinc? I think the 150 was in regards to my spreadsheet.. sorry did not mean to confuse...this more being an example of what to say.. Maybe post with more specific BG number in ProZinc forum area.. and can always use 911 option... Also maybe retest in next hour and the follwing.. can always feed kitty as well and see if number going up and make sure not going down. Best to you!!!

I have work tomorrow and if I wait too much longer tonight I'm not going to be able to do his morning shot at the 12 hr mark :(

I'd just skip it tonight and get back on track in the morning then

And he's also earned a reduction with that 58 so you'd want to reduce his dose. If you've been giving 2 units, you'd want to reduce to 1.75 (if you can) or 1.5 ...since I don't have any information on you, I don't know what syringes you have or how much experience you have shooting doses like .75

From the ProZinc Forum:
Low Preshot Numbers
The general recommendation for new diabetics is not to shoot a preshot under 200, but to wait 20 minutes (without feeding as food raises blood glucose levels) and retest. If the number is rising and above 200, then a shot can be given with perhaps a little less insulin given

It would really help if you'd start entering the test results you get into our spreadsheet. We really depend on seeing the spreadsheet before giving much in the way of insulin advice......Here are Instructions on getting the FDMB Spreadsheet ..... Also, you need to fill out your Signature so we don't have to keep asking the same questions over and over. To do that just go to the top right and click on your sign on name...a drop down menu will come up. Choose "Signature". A new box will come up for you to enter things like Your name/Cats name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, any other health problems? and maybe a general location of where you live. When you have it going, the link to your spreadsheet would also go into your signature.

If you have any problems, just let us know so we can help you!

Here's a Protocol for ProZinc that has lots of info for you. I use Lantus so I'm not too much help when it comes to ProZinc

Hi CB! How is your kitty today? Yes, it definitely looks like it's time to reduce the dose. You've been giving 1.5? If you post in the Prozinc forum with your preshot numbers, we'd be happy to help you figure out a good dose!
