I am a little confused as to how much food is appropriate for a 15.5lb diabetic cat. Switching foods and trying to find what he likes.. I feel like I am opening cans all the time and throwing some away. I have another kitty as well who is getting only wet food. But still not sure.. when giving insulin and figuring it all out.. how much food is enough.? I am scared not to leave food out in his blood sugar goes down. How often are you feeding.. every 3 hours or every 5? or 1x per 12 hours...

Think we are averaging 2-3 small (3oz) cans per day.. using fancy feast, tiki cat salmon and chicken as well as wellness chicken. They are every picky and prefer Fancy Feast. Think I need to try and find some more low carb foods for them' so they have more options. They love fish and are missing tuna and sardines!

Thanks so much!!

Lots of different things go into how much each cat should eat, like how well controlled they are (out of control cats will need to eat more), how active they are, if they need to gain, lose or maintain

There's a "starting" amount of calories though that's [13.6 x weight in pounds] + 70....so for a 15.5lb cat, that's about 280 calories per day. The amount of calories in each food is over on the far right of THIS FOOD CHART

But....that's just a starting point....you should weigh weekly and if the cat needs to gain weight, add more....if they need to lose weight, feed less

Thanks for info... still somewhat confused (the chart and math not my thin :o) but will try and figure out some more.. any idea what a small can of FF chicken is calorie wise?

My diabetic cat is 19 lbs today. Was near 30 lbs before diabetes and was somewhat too heavy. He was 13.5 lbs when diagnosed 2 months ago.

I have two cats the other isn't as large but still large. I have been feeding 7-9 cans of Fancy Feast pate daily to them. The diabetic cat has been muscling in on more than his share despite the other cat being the usual bully with everything else. I have begun to guard the other cat when eating so she gets enough. I think 4 cans for him and 3 cans for her would be close to being right.

I think Fancy Feast low carb pates are ballpark 90 calories per 3 oz can.
