? Lump(s) Under Chin - Feline Acne? Rodent Ulcer? - Please Advise!

Hi guys,

Yet another skin question about Carter...

Well first off, he's doing great on insulin! On .25u from 3u of Lantus. His belly licking has all cleared up with the introduction of Nordic Natural Omega 3s supplement in his food.

I was just petting his face and noticed a lumpy feeling under his chin... almost like a mat, except it's not a mat, it's his skin. It feels like a cluster of two or three lumps.

There is a little spot that is kind of red but the rest of his has no colour, like you wouldn't know anything was there unless you actually touched in. He doesn't care if you touch it.

I'm concerned. I thought about feline acne, as he eats of a plastic dish (it's this special one I got off Amazon that is super flat to ensure they finish all of the food even though I don't like using plastic in general and wouldn't be opposed to changing) and his pet fountain is plastic but he rarely if ever drinks out of it, to my knowledge. But it's not multiple small, tiny bumps or pink/red all over, all his fur is still there. There's no "black-heads" or flea dirt.

Anyone have any ideas? I was also considering a rodent ulcer but it's on his chin, not bottom or top lip.

Earliest I could take him in to the vets would be Tuesday.

He's acting totally fine otherwise. If it was an infection or an abscess/tumor, wouldn't that be negatively affecting his BG?

Erica our kitty Nala use to break out with feline acne and it was from the plastic feeding and drinking dish.We treated her for sometime before we narrowed it down to her dishes. Once we changed never again did she get the acne.

Yeah I used to use stainless before but when I switched to wet food, I noticed he would never finish the whole plate so I tried these dishes. I'm going to pick up something else tomorrow. I also saw in an old thread someone putting tiny glass bowls in the autofeeder to prevent them from touching the plastic there as well.

It does not look like chin acne, though. It's like 2 or three larger lumps with no particular shape, not hard but not soft. No tiny bumps, not discolouration or irritation except a bit from where I was looking to see if it was a scab. Like if you looked at his chin you wouldn't know anything was there, you literally have to touch it to notice. I've never had a cat get feline acne but from seeing it in pictures, it looks a lot different than this.
 
Lots of things cause lumps little non cancer tumors, fatty tumors, fungus, bacteria , maybe bug bites stings. I googled lumps under chin.

I'm just worried about taking him to the vet and what to ask/avoid for in regards to treatment, of whatever it is. I know steroids are a big no-go and I read that's what a lot of vets jump right too, but I'm not sure what other medications/ointments are not safe for diabetic cats off the top of my head. If it was clearly chin acne, I would attempt some home remedies this weekend to see if it cleared up but because it's under the skin, there's not much I can do for it.

Of course I want to get it checked out and fixed but his BG is so well regulated right now and I'm just afraid of something jeopardizing that. If it was an infection though, I feel like that would cause his BG to spike, and it hasn't?

I will just have to be very vocal in my concerns and make sure they don't give him any injections or meds without my consent, and express that it's very important to consider his diabetes.
 
If anyone has a list of safe versus not safe medications/antibiotics or oitments I'd appreciate it. Just so I have some sort of reference for the vet appointment.
 
Riley has a little feline acne on his chin but it's just small black bits. I use a cotton ball and with hazel to clean his chin.
 
I used witch hazel too.... ( and ha ha, prep H wipes are witch hazel as well)

but I had a prescription for myself too for a product called clindamyacin topical. it's a clear liquid for human breakouts...

We had trouble with chin acne for a while..... it's not just the plastic dishes, it can be from them dragging their chin in their food when they eat too.
The vet actually had to squeeze one on Shadow's chin because it was a little deeper just like a zit and then it finally went away.


The drugs you want to avoid are convenia ( an antibiotic that can be problematic because it last two weeks and if a cat has a reaction
to it, you can't undo it.)
the other is metacam....


You can also try using a warm washcloth and washing the chin a few times a day..... and then applying witch hazel with a cotton ball
or qtip.

I tried some witch hazel last night. I want to shave his chin area so I can actually get a better look but I'm afraid he'll freak out.

Interesting that you mentioned that, because Carter does drag his chin through his food... half the time he still has food on his chin after he eats.

So does what I'm describing sound like chin acne? or like you mentioned, maybe a bigger pimple?
 
Just chiming in - Tasha had a bad chin acne problem for awhile. Huge pimples, blackheads... Ugh. And somehow, I was oblivious to it (I blame all her fur). Switching from plastic dishes and then using Stridex pads helped immensely. I think we may have done some sort of antibiotic for awhile because it was so bad and they were concerned about infections. I would soak a cotton ball in warm water, wash her chin with that, then the Stridex.

I don't know how I haven't noticed. But it doesn't look sore or infected thankfully, but there is a clear lump or two that may actually just be a few clusters of bumps together but I can't really tell without shaving. I will pick up some stuff today and try it, see if it makes a difference over the weekend.
 
Yes, shaving the area does help in resolving the problem. Sometimes opening each pimple also helps. I have used the the needle from a hypodermic needle for that. An insulin syringe needle is to small in diameter.

It does look a lot like Tasha's chin and she had it everywhere. I noticed she had been rubbing against things but she has always done that so I thought she had sort of cut herself and wasn't too concerned. We were also in a position of needing to basically pop her zits. So gross. That's where the warm towel really helped out. Ugh, I had forgotten about all that. It was such a mess. But it cleared up relatively easily once we were aware and made a couple of small changes so don't despair!

I shaved his and it definitely appears to be chin acne... he has some larger pimples or lumps that I'm hoping will burt on their own but it doesn't look infected or anything, just a bit red. Applying Stridex pads as well.
