Woke up this morning to give Ben his insulin. He wasn't all that interested in food. Then I noticed that he had peed blood. Called my vet (it is 5 am here). He hasn't called me back. It has been 30". The answering service has paged him twice. How long should I wait until I try another vet in town? I know that obstructions are a medical emergency.

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
If Ben is peeing blood, it means he is able to pass at least some urine. Have you looked in the LB to see how many times he has peed since you last cleaned out the LB.
It could be a UTI that is causing the blood.
Is he going back to the LB many times to try and pee?
When he goes next time try and catch any urine to see what he is peeing.

The vet finally called me back. Everyone (but me) seems to not be too worried about it but I convinced him to meet me at the clinic. So I'm heading there now. He has made multiple trips to the LB since we got up. Each time is just a drop or two of bright red urine. He just had a full lab workup with urinalysis yesterday and everything was fine. I let you know what I find out.

It sounds like a UTI to me if he is peeing a drop or two multiple times. But if you are able to get the vet to check it that is great. Let us know how you get on.

Definitely a UTI. Which is interesting because he had a urinalysis yesterday at 10 am that was fine. The vet's only explanation was that some bacteria was introduced into the bladder when they got the sample. So he is now on a 14 day course of antibiotics, some medicine to relax his urinary sphincter and some pain meds. Plus he didn't charge me an ER fee since it might have been caused by them.

And on another note he offered me some Humulin R insulin to bring Ben's sugar down fast when it gets high. I declined and told him he responds well to a dose of Prozinc. This is the vet that gave Ben 3 units of R and 3 units of Prozinc when I was boarding him. Silly man, Ben can drop from 350 t0 100's on 1.2 U of Prozinc so no I don't think I need R. :-)

Was bacteria found in the urine?
Was anything found in the urine sample like crystals?
Was the urine sample taken by inserting a needle through the abdomen into the bladder? That is the only way to get a sterile urine sample.

Yes-no-yes

Looked like rods under the microscope so probably E. Coli.
