Newbie

My cat, Rueben, is currently in vet hospital, as the vet is having
difficulty in regulating Rueben's glucose levels. I'm hoping to
bring him home tomorrow. He is about 12, and I've had him
for two years. as he was a rescue from the local humane society.
This came as quite a shock to me that my companion became so ill.

I am definitely treating, but a bit overwhelmed by all of the new
things I need to learn. Rueben is a very sweet kitty, although lately
has been quite irritable - no doubt in response to his illness. I am
apprehensive about giving him injections, but I will persevere as I
love him dearly. Thanks for any encouragement and/or information
you can share.

Im hoping Ruben gets to come home soon.
If you can read as much on this site there is a lot of good advice and guidance. If you can set up a Spreadsheet it would be helpful.

Thank you, DebG! He came home, and we are learning our new routine. No home testing yet.
The vet suggested 1/2 cup of Rueben's food for his first meal. Problem: He's never eaten
this much, has been accustomed to 1/4 c. for weight management. So I halved the
dosage of insulin so as not to overdose him. He goes back to the vet hospital next week
as the vet wants to do more testing of his glucose levels. I think probably for a day.
His symptoms are the same - the water dish was empty! Huge amounts of urine
in the litter box, etc. He seems cheerful and affectionate, even if a bit lethargic.

Hello and welcome! No worries we all were overwhelmed in the beginning. Lots to cover.

Try practicing a few shots with water on an apple. Similar resistance to the puncture will help you get a feel for it. Ditto with the home testing - you can use a grape for that, since the lancets are very short. Test yourself a few times to get the timing down for your meter.
