Ross's mom

I'm just wondering if anyone has slipped shots before I mean I have when. He was too low for injections but what if I was away for a day and couldn't give him insulin how would that affect him?? I'd be missing 3 shots in a row I know I should find someone to give shots well I'm away I'm just wondering what would happened if he missed

It would certainly be best if you had someone who could test and give shots while you were away. Missing 3 shots would affect any momentum that Ross may have started. Sometimes the vet's office has a technician who is willing to come and do testing and shooting. If you can't find anyone it won't be harmful, unless Ross has ever had ketones and DKA (diabteic ketoacidosis).

He's never had any ketones that I'm aware of but I've never done Home testing for that before.

You can test for ketones with letodiastix:

You should be able to get these at most pharmacies. You would need to collect a urine sample and dip the strip into the urine, wait the stated amount of time..usually 15 seconds for ketones and 30 seconds for glucose... and compare the colour on the stick to the legend.

If Ross had ever had DKA he would have been very sick and would have had to spend several days at an animal ER.

Missing 3 shots is not the best, but if you are unable to board him somewhere they can deal with testing and shots or find someone to come in, then the worst it would do is set him back a bit in the treatment plan.

Thank you I'm going to get some and start doing test at home for that to, he's never been in the er for anything before and the vet never said anything to me about testing his urine ever. I'm hoping to find someone that will come in and do it I don't want him to go back that's for sure he's not regular at all yet in his numbers I'm still working on it I haven't done my spreadsheet in forever I'll have to fill it in. Thanks again for your advice

When a kitty is not regulated it is a good idea to test the urine for ketones. Ketones will usually develop when..glucose is too high, kitty is not eating enough, any sort of infection. Any of these or a combination of these can lead to ketones, which if not dealt with could lead to DKA.

It would be great if you could update the spreadsheet and post with your daily numbers. Caninsulin is a harsh fast acting insulin and definitely needs monitoring since it can cause big drops in some kitties. Quite a number of members who started on Caninsulin have changed over to Prozinc or Lantus or Levemir all of which are gentler long acting insulins.

You might do a Google search for "Pet sitters near (where you live)"

You can interview and find someone who can give insulin and be willing to learn to test too

WOW you sure have had your hands full with all the problems your furbabies are having. I only have 2 FD kitties and somedays I feel overwhelmed! Major respect sent to you for everything you are dealing with.

That is the one problem with Caninsulin, with many kitties, is the rapid and sometimes steep drops, then bouncing up to higher numbers again. Once you are able to manage it you will probably have better luck with one of the gentler, long -lasting insulins. Many people who have switched from Caninsulin have had good results with Lantus (glargine)

Thanks I'm trying to make it work after all they were all my babies before I had kids Now I just have to many of both lol.... I heard it wasn't the best I can use for insulin so I'm definitely going to try a new one but sadly I'm just letting him use this one since I've already bought the vial. is lantus the best choice to change to when I do so? I'd love to have a normal range of numbers poor Ross's ears look like a pin cushion cause im always testing him over and over because he's so unpredictable

Lantus is a good insulin. Prozinc and levemir are also good insulins. There really isn't a one size fits all for insulins. Many of the members here use Lantus and it has been shown to have a good remission rate, so that may be one to consider. Some people have done well with Prozinc or Levemir which are other good gentler long lasting insulins.

In the meantime, you have Ross on Caninsulin, which has worked well for some people, but does have those steep drops, which makes testing so important. At least you have him on something, even if it is more difficult to predict than the others.

Okay great thank you so much for the info I'm gonna do the change soon I think if his numbers don't get really good in the next few weeks of shots then I'd like to try a new one anyway. I figure I do the home test so I can find what's best for him after all.
