Kidney Failure

Let me know if there's anything I can help you with. We've had 2 cats with kidney failure - Shadow lived over 3 years from diagnosis, until she was 19. And Rosa is currently being treated for CKD. The earlier you catch it and start treating, the better as you know.

Definitely go to Tanya's website that Chris and China posted a link to. It is filled with vetted, comprehensive information. It has saved my life in dealing with this disease. If it were not for the Terumo needles they recommend, it would be more difficult to give fluids at home. It can be overwhelming to go through all the info, but take it slow and share the info with your vet.

Thanks for the replies. Did any of you buy Tanya's book? This is not for my cat but my relatives cat that I posted about before broke her back end and has been trying to recover for the last 6 weeks but it is not going well at all. she stopped eating last wed went to vet sat morning he said let it go couple more days went back to vet Tuesday and saw a different one he ordered bloodwork, enema, subq fluids and kept her a few hours and said she has sign of kidney damage. So sub q fluids twice a day 9 days and and syringe feeding to get her to eat. She's 18 was in good health until the fall happened and now just seems to be going downhill. Could be sub q fluids for life. Since I already dealt with these vets I know there is a lot more to this care.
How are Terumo needles different from the ones they vet gave with the subq fluids to bring home?

If they can get a full copy of the bloodwork, there may be more that should be done. It very much depends on the cat - and whether this is CKD or because her kidneys have been damaged by the injury she has, though at 18 some degree of CKD is not unusual at all. The needles that vets usually try to have people use are 18 gauge Monojects - which are pretty much like harpoons. The Terumos have ultra thin walls, so the needle is smaller for the same size of hole. They're sharper too and more comfortable for the cat of course, and you can pick the gauge that the cat is more likely to be comfortable with - a lot of people use a 20, 21 or 22 gauge.

Where can I get the Terumos needles?
I ordered mine online from Thriving Pets. I have the 22 gauge, so if your relatives would like to try a few before they commit to buying a whole box, I can send you a few to try out - I bought 300 so I have plenty! :)

Thank you for all of the info. Unfortunately after two calls to the vet today and them saying to just keep force feeding and do the sub q fluids and they said there is nothing that shows in the results that she would be dying the cat passed away this evening.
@Critter Mom the one you gave me the info for to get the playpen because of her broken hips.and she really loved that playpen never tried to get out of it once. she like to be outside in it. i couldnt find the post you linked it in to update you that way.

I'm very sad to hear that the little one has gone to the Bridge. I am glad that she enjoyed her playpen; that it gave her a comforting place where she enjoyed spending time. My sincere condolences to you and your family at this time of deeply painful loss.
