I have a question about the treatment of pancreatitis flare-ups in diabetic and IBD cats. My Ozzy has been having a bad flare and the vet finally gave him Budesonide (he's on 1 mg, twice a day) but after a few days it's sky-rocketing his glucose numbers. What else do you treat pancreatitis with, if not steroids? (We are looking at a diet change, but at the moment the goal is to at least keep him eating, which he isn't doing much of as it is, without appetite stimulants)

Prior to the Budesonide, he was on Cerenia, Buprenorphine, Mirtazapine (still on this) and Cisapride for his severe constipation.

Thank you very much for your help!

i'm straining my brain to remember an anti-inflammatory that my vet mentioned we might try if mr b's inflammation (ibd, triad) doesnt calm down through the slow regulation of his BG. when i get home later i can look it up. Avitica? something like that. begins with an A.

i dont know budesonide but its an anti-inflam. i didnt think such a med would cause BG to go up, but then again i'm new to this game. did you call your vet and tell them?

PS: If the steroids are necessary the general FDMB recommendation is to adjust insulin around the need to treat other conditions. Perhaps discuss dose with your vet? I assume from your post you're home testing. It's especially important at times like these because the levels may drop when symptoms resolve.

Thanks very much! If you do remember the name, that'd be much appreciated. I did call the vet and he said put the insulin level up (he was on Caninsulin 8 units twice a day, now adjusted to 9 or 10, depending on BG levels). He also said that if this Budesonide is messing too much with his glucose levels it may not be right for him. But he seemed to be suggesting that there isn't anything else we can do. I don't want to see him in pain, but at the same time it's so scary that his BG is jumping so much. :(

Hi Alexandra, and welcome to you and Ozzy.

Try this post for info:

Look in the FDMB FAQs for the Pancreatitis Primer.

Sorry I can't write more (not very well right now). I hope Ozzy feels better soon. Pancreatitis is the pits. :bighug:

Thanks very much and sorry to hear you're not well...

I'll look up the info you linked to. Yes, I home test, I know how dangerous it can be for our furry babies. Would love to hear your thoughts on this when you feel better. I am at a loss as to what to do, if we have to give up the steroids. He was in a lot of pain from the pancreatitis before the Budesonide and the Buprenorphine was knocking him out too much, even on a low dose.

Atopica!

I have no idea how effective it is. My vet mentioned we might try it at some point, but there's the name. I'm sorry about Ozzy. I know its very difficult seeing our furbuddies unwell!

Thank you very much! I'll ask the vet about it. :) It is difficult... Wish I could just make it go away, as I'm sure we all do. Sigh...
