Really bad constipation and starting to dehydrate. Keeps trying to go and can't. Extra pumpkin hasn't helped. So at the vet.

Ok. Back home. He has stool high up, said it's to high for enema. He gave him some as he said nasty tasting stuff. I didn't ask because they always list it on the bill. This time they didn't. Said it should work by tonight.

Double up on the pumpkin and miralax until he returns to normal then cut back miralax only. Use lasix and inhaler as needed only. Bupre he said to go back to the .05 every other day. Agrees having the echo done. He said Smokey is hypersensitive to drugs, so half a recommended dose should be done first then work up.

Oh and I'm suppose to stop worrying so much.

I so hope it does!!! I don't suppose he told you how to stop worrying so much. Did you schedule the echo or do you have to go elsewhere for it?

Sending poop vines for Smokey and no worry vines for you. Wish it were that simple, Paula, that we could turn off the worry. Hope you can get the echo soon.

That's the best joke I've heard in weeks!!! Doesn't he understand you are a member of Helicopter Moms Anonymous? Holy cow!

Sending lots of vines and prayers that the nasty tasting stuff works, and that he feels better soon. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good luck with that! HA! If we didn't all worry so much about our kitties, none of us would have found FDMB. If you figure out where the Off switch is for worrying, please let me know.

Vines that the yucky tasting stuff helps with pooping and that Smokey keeps feeling good.

:woot: we have poop! I don't know if it's all but at least a start. Echo is scheduled for early June with cardiologist. Could have had it Friday but it would not be with the cardiologist. If they have a cardiologist why wouldn't I want them????
Yay for poop!!!!!! I would want the cardiologist to do it too!

Hurray for poop and the appointment! Did they see fluid in his lungs or around the heart on the xray? Just wondering how or why they would want you to give Lasix on an "as needed" basis. My understanding is either they need it or they don't. Hope I didn't just stir up the worry again...just curious.

Friday's xray had possible fluid hence the PE diagnosis (but echo is needed). Also they based it on March dx of cardiac arrhythmia and or HCM. Yet his chest sounded clear.

Today regular vet said chest and lungs were clear and no crackles, rales or wheezing.

Like some humans, they are on diuretic (depending on cause) daily to get rid of the excess fluid. Then changed to once or twice a week to keep it from accumulating. I know some who take it once a week and some who take it for 3 days then stop for 4 then repeat that cycle.

My guess is that is what my vet thinks for Smokey. He thinks it more respiratory stridor/asthma. The lasix will dehydrate him to fast at the dose he was given. He sees Smokey every 3 months and has never heard fluid. So the plan for now is to give if he starts his funny breathing and the inhaler until the echo is done.

Smokey has had no noise since the inhaler was used Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Thanks Paula. I didn't think to ask the cardiologist any additional questions but this explanation is a big help. Doodles goes back at the end of June for his echo/ xray.

Welcome. I didn't think Smokey needed it especially twice a day. But the ER Drs are the expert right????? Anyway this way, giving it when needed helps prevent the potassium loss it creates. He's doing well without right now, so who's to say. If he accumulates fluid then of course he will get it. So far he isn't and if he is its extremely slow.

I had a civvie who accumulated in her chest (she had mammary cancer). They drained it and it came back within 36 hrs. This was 30+ years ago, I don't know if diuretics were used back then.

Thank God for the poop...that was a real nail biter for me...what my Peeks went through seems like yesterday. I will continue to pray for Smokey...he is a special boy.

TY Dawn. Peeks was special too, I'm sure you miss her constantly.

Smokey wasn't eating much at all so he wasn't getting the pumpkin or miralax in. I'm sure that's what caused the constipation. He went daily and sometimes twice.

During our 1 week recheck the cardiologist did say the fluid was clearing up but wanted to keep him on the Lasix twice a day. Now I am questioning this...ugh.

Don't question yourself. We don't know Smokeys problem yet. My gut told me it was asthma or airway blockage. You heard him only on inhale. If he had fluid in his chest or lungs I would hear it all the time.

When DH had a bout of kidney disease the fluid he couldn't pass accumulated in his abdomen, chest and around heart. When he laid down or was sleeping he'd start to gurgle. So many times I had to wake him because it sounded like he was drowning. Smokey doesn't have that sound, so the nurse in me says it's not fluid at least not extensive.

Its worth asking though if the echo/xray has improved since last one if dose can be changed. It never hurts to ask.

To change things up a bit. Today because the store didn't have pumpkin (I get a can when I open one) so I do have some.

I got Beech-Nut 100% natural just butternut squash (I love the little jar). It should be okay right?

Thank you, Paula. Yes, I miss him terribly. He would go a bit everyday, but I'd get a good pile every 3rd day. The day he couldn't go and received the enema, the vet said he would have never passed it on his own. He was throwing up after straining, so the extra Miralax, lactulose, and lack of water weren't going to help by that point. He wouldn't touch pumpkin. It's all such a balancing act and you just wish you could really know what's going on inside them at all times...I know how difficult all this is for you...keeping you in my thoughts always.

Dawn

Did he write you a giant script for Valium?? How are you supposed to do that??

The squash should be fine....the whole idea behind pumpkin/squash is to increase the fiber and they both contain that

I wish he gave me a script. As I was leaving the room the Dr said Smokey was on life #12. I guess that's good.

He loved the squash. Look at the beautiful blue tonight.

Wow....getting that poop out must have really felt good!!

Looks like it was holding up his BG too! That's quite a slide tonight!!

Time to hop on your surfboard Smokey!!
