He was a good boy and didn't mess up my dinner plans. At +8, I gave him twice his snack because Momma was just tooooooo tired to have to get up again to see if he was continuing to go down. :blackeye: Otherwise his AM would have probably been lower. I like that he has spent 3 full days in all blues and greens. Would love to get him in numbers under 120 and take a reduction that way. But, then we all know who the dance instructor is.

Bubba's +2- 101 Yeah!

Forrest isn't himself today. Didn't beg to go out early at 5:30 as he usually does, and he was down in the basement at AM feed time and I had to go get him. He ate but not everything as he normally does. I inspected him really well and noticed his one ear has a scratch on it, looked inside and all kinds of black stuff and red inside unlike the other one. I took some q-tips started to clean some out and along with the black gunk is some a little bleeding. Does this sound like an ear infection @carfurby ? I know you have a lot of experience with them. He just seems off his game today.

Bubba is looking good and that is beautiful AMPS! Poor Forrest....hope his ear gets better and Carla has some good insight for you.

No experience with ear issues here (Well, what do you know? There's ONE pet problem we haven't had. Yet.) I hope Forrest feels better soon.

As for I-Do-It-My-Way Bubba, you wouldn't want to crush his little soul by criticizing his methods or anything, but I will say that when @Chris & China threatens Rosie with an increase, she gets right on board with the program. Maybe Chris could talk to Bubba for you about a more gentle approach to earning reductions.

It sounds like it could be an ear infection and the blood is from him scratching at his ear. I think a vet visit is a good idea.

How does everyone feel about the 1 year rabies vaccine vs. the 3 year? The vet wants to do a 1 year. She said it is better as far as sarcoma go. Thoughts?

I'm sorry Forrest has two ear infections. I hope they clear up soon. What medicine did the vet give you?

In WV we're required to get the rabies vaccine. I prefer to do the 3 year because I don't have to drag them all to the vet each year for a shot and I hope getting 2 less shots in a 3 year period means less chance of a problem.

The vet gave us Thresaderm, had to be kept in the fridge. I am with you on the year reasoning. She made it sound like the new 1 year was safer. I think I'll post in Health too.

Good luck with the reduction!!

If he doesn't hold it, you might want to consider waiting to reduce until he drops below 50 three times (or below 40 once) instead of taking the reduction right away. With cats that have been diagnosed over a year (and he's coming really close!) it's sometimes a better idea and can help to make sure they are really ready to hold the reduction.....but we'll hope he holds this one!!!

Sending vines for Forrest's ear too!!

Thanks Chris. I am hoping he holds this to as he has been flirting with it for days. I should know soon enough.

Good luck with the reduction. He has been hinting it's due for a few days now, so hopefully it'll stick.

You asked earlier about vaccines. Did you see Jill's post on To Vaccinate or Not? in the Health Forum.

Sending vines for Forrest ears.

ETA: Could you modify your subject line to show he's above 50 now. Thx!

oops, I will change my subject line. I was looking for the post from Jill and couldn't find it. Thx for linking it.

Bubba, can you remind Pimp how to see those nice green numbers? I think he has forgotten.

My vet only offers the 1-year-vaccine because of the sarcoma risk and she is adamant that it is much safer for cats. I am generally careful about over-vaccinating and tend to rotate other shots on a three-year plan (e.g. for my dogs I do: Year 1: Parvo vaccine, Year 2: Distemper, Year 3: Adenovirus and then start back up with Parvo). At the same time, I want my pets to be protected against contagious diseases (especially since I foster and never know what a foster cat or dog might bring home.... but I would use the same caution when a cat goes outside) and I want to follow the law (well, I have to in order to get my animals licensed). Long story short: my cats get their rabies shots every year to cut back on the sarcoma risk.

Congrats on the reducie!! Bubba is looking good.

BFG gets the 3year vaccine that is recommended on Dr Lisa's site, He was getting this annually , because legislation here in Spain requires it,(since his FD diagnosis we are she is giving him an excemption and we will do it 3 yearly) and she said that the 3 year product had a lower risk of ISS that the one year product she was using. (I guess that might depend on what the one year product was)

I think that what you need to ask is if it's specifically Non-adjuvanted, from the info on Dr Lisa's site the merial purevax product is the only one that is Non-adjuvanted.

From catinfo.org
That said, at this time, it appears that adjuvanted vaccines have a higher risk rate of sarcomas when compared with non-adjuvanted vaccines.

Fortunately, there is one line of non-adjuvanted rabies vaccines available and that is Merial's PureVax rabies vaccines but it is important to keep in mind that sarcomas have occurred at the site of PureVax vaccines so we want to be mindful of the frequency that even this vaccine is used.

Up until July 2014 we only had one choice of PureVax rabies - one that was only labeled for 1-year. It did not make me happy to have to inject feline patients with a rabies vaccine every year but the good news is that we now have two choices:

1) 1-year label

2) 3-year label

Perhaps I am over simplifying, but it seems to me if you give a vaccine every three years instead of annually, does that in itself not reduce the risk of ISS ??

Hey Andy, I feel your pain. It took us almost a month to get him back in the saddle again. I'll have Bubs give Pimp a jingle. Thanks for the ear vines. He is feeling better all ready! :bighug:

I like the idea of you rotating the vaccines. What I have done in the past with my dog is had titers done and she has so far still been protected. I think I will do the same for the cats and the vaccines that are not required by law.

This is where I am confused. I had read that there was a 3 year non=adjuvanted rabies by merial purevax yet this vet yesterday was pushing the 1 year one saying it was the non-adjuvanted one with less risk of sarcoma. But what Dr. Lisa

I guess where I got confused was the vet made it sound like the 1 year was the only non-adjuvanted.one on the market that reduced the sarcoma risk. I will be discussing this with her when I take Forrest back on Friday as to why she won't use the 3 year merial purevax. I posted this on Health also and Larry and Kitties said the one year stings less and doesn't cause the lethargy that the 3 year one dose. But it looks like Dr. Lisa is promoting the 3 year non-adjuvanted to reduce risk.

Bfg had no problem with stinging, didn't even turn his head.

I think that it's much newer on the market, perhaps he is a bit suspect of newer products and likes to keep using his regular stuff, or if it's more expensive perhaps most of his customers balk at the cost so he doesn't stock it??

My old vet used it for a while now. Both Forrest and Bubba's last vaccines were the purevac 3 year. I think I did read that it was more expensive than the 1 year. You could be right about keeping cost down for the patients.
