Smiffy's Fructosamine result

Tell your vet about this as well. It could be that Smiffy feels better when the Caninsulin dose has worn off.

Also, if she's avoiding coming downstairs to eat then put some food up beside her. ETA - With insulin in her system, Smiffy needs to get food onboard so make it as easy as possible for her to get at it on her terms.

I have posted a new thread as Marlena suggested just about getting Smiffy's shot in ... you will see once you read it that I am doing EVERTHING to try to make it easy for us both ... she really has me sussed ..... I DO try putting the bowl next to her upstairs as well and let her settle for a bit ... but I only have to move slightly and she will withdraw ..... she seems to be more scared of eating out of the bowl than she does eating the biscuits when I put a few out .. .have a look at my new thread ... she really is a tinker - always has been and very affectionate with kisses etc but not one for being touched very much no matter what we have done with her which is just love her to bits ..... our other cat Pasha was virtually ferrel when we got her and the Vets used to draw straws as to who was going to handle her! She is tiny but was viscious but I managed to tame her and now she is the cuddliest cat ... if she were the one with Diabetes I would have none of these problems ... she is only just over 3 kilos despite having had mostly dry food all her life but she DOES like wet food and wants scraps of chicken and fish off our plates .... Smiffy is just not a touch feely cat ... rubs and kisses .... doesn't even like to be brushed ....... I've always called her my little tinker .. we have loved her to bits and let her rule the house!!!!

I have two cats that both use the litter tray so I would have to get keytone strips and try to catch her when she pees - she has just peed now and I would have been able to take a sample as she always pees at the front of the litter tray and sometimes outside it just to be more difficult ...
I realise it is harder with a multi-cat household. There were 5 cats here back when Bertie was first diagnosed, and he is also an indoor/outdoor cat. It's often a matter of watching and waiting. (And if you find pee on the clingfilm and test it you'll soon know whether it is Smiffy's or not...;) )

...which ones should I order from Amazon?
Here's a link to Ketodiastix on Amazon UK. But it should also be possible to get them from most pharmacies, so maybe a friend/neighbour could pick some up for you if you don't want to order online?
Note: 'Ketodiastix' test for both urine glucose and ketones, so these will give you more information than 'Ketostix' that only test for ketones.

There is more info on how to use them here:

Testing for ketones is very important, especially with recently diagnosed cats and those who are in high numbers. Anything above a 'trace' ketone reading is a reason for a vet visit ASAP. But, hopefully, testing Smiffy's pee for ketones will just be a reassurance that all is OK. :)

..I will try to understand how to use the AccuChek meter when I next have a visitor ... I am by no means stupid but when it comes to gadgets and instructions I draw a blank!!!
Glucose meters are very straightforward to use, and are much easier than the blurb that comes with them probably suggests.
If you make yourself a cuppa tea, sit down comfortably, and get your meter out now, you may well find that you've mastered it in half and hour to an hour's time. Honestly!
There are also many Youtube videos out there showing how to use glucose meters. Here is one about the Accucheck.

Oh ... thanks .. will have a read and try to bookmark ... have started a new thread about the injections..... by the way is Bertie lying around in this humid weather .. Smiffy is not active at all today but she was fine yesterday .....

Ah yes I forgot about the video ... I bookmarked it ...... I have extra tabs but I realised that I only have 12 lancet drums so I will have to be careful which ones I buy now so that they go with the meter so that I have more in stock ......

@Elizabeth and Bertie I have just read the instructions on Sugarpet for the ketones strips and it says you have to count 15 second EXACTLY and then 15 seconds EXACTLY again first to get the keytones and then to get the reading to see if the cat has gone over the renal threshold since the last time that it peed ...... I don't have anywhere a clock with second hand or a timer to do this EXACTLY ... do you just count to fifteen when you test?

Here ya go. This will count down 30 seconds for you.

Clever ... see if I can bookmark that one ..... I don't seem to be able to bookmark anything from here ... really frustrating .... do you use your watch or a clock?
Just mananged to bookmark it .... will try just googling second timer and see what happens - that would be good ..... by the way BOTH Smiffy and Pasha are just lying around today and for the last few days upstairs where it is cool all day - it is probably me over worrying again ... is Bertie out and about? Pasha is only 9 so I would have thought she would be up adn about - think neither of them like the little preson that is playing next door ...... both of them very lethargic ....am I worrying over nothing?

Looby, it is rather hot today so I think this is why they are lethargic.
Rocky is sleeping in the garden all day, did not even come to ask for food (very unusual) and only ate when I brought him in for testing!
So the possibility is they are hot, I hope.
Try not to worry.

Can you just create a 'Smiffy Diabetes' document on your computer and save all the potentially useful links there in one place?

Eliz
I have a folder full of information and bookmarked other links .... it worked this time so I have it all on line filed .... I look at things each day so that it is in my head too .... I am a Virgo so very organised

Looby,

You can use a computer. Glucometers are a walk in the park by comparison.

I will watch the video tomorrow ... on my list ... better than wading through lots of unnecessary copy ... I think the AccuChek meter has four manuals inside but there is one that is a picture guide but the video will be better I think .... I will have to get some more lancets .... the meter only came with two lots of six ... hardly seen Smiffy today nor Pasha for that matter ..... it is so humid they both have their cool spot upstairs

Thanks yes .... they wouldn't find a cool spot outside because of the toddler next door that moved in a few months ago but now the weather is nice he is out so they don't like it ... we have communal passage between our two back gardens so the cats don't want to go down the passage anymore in case they bump into strange people poor things .... things have changed in the gardens ... the houses used to belong to old people that weren't out there much so to some extent they have lost their territory ..... rather them indoors though than out and go towards the street in Pasha's case ... tried to get Smiffy out today but as soon as she heard the little boy she turned round and had her drink indoors instead of out of her dirty mugs outside!

Here's a more up-to-date video about how to use the Accu-Chek Aviva (different model and works slightly differently to earlier versions - check which video has a glucometer which looks like the one you have and follow the relevant video).

Talking to you now is what made me think you were in the States but Somebody said you were in Wiltshire?
