a combined question. Hope you people arent sick of me LOL

1. Is cellulose a bad ingredient for cats? You may have noticed i'm trying to narrow down the cause of loose stools recently. Seeking the common denominator in his b12 pill AND his probiotic is making me wonder.

2. Is there a good probiotic for cats? I saw good things said about renew life, and i bought it, but it is suspect in his loose stools. My vet gives me Fortiflora but the ingredients are not impressive. Anyone use fortiflora? Other probiotics?

Thanks!

I use Fortiflora for my IBD kitty. I used to use it when she had a flare but I use it daily now to help prevent flares. I have also used it as an appetite enhancer for my sugar kitty, and whenever one of the cats is on an antibiotic.

A couple of things, Jen:

1. There is research which suggests that probiotics may be contraindicated in humans with acute pancreatitis. (See link below for websearch results you might want to look at.)

2. Fortiflora nauseates Saoirse really badly (and I've read similar reports from other members here whose cats, as best I can recall, also had pancreatitis issues).

Cellulose is one of the common binders in pills/tablets. It is also in a few weight-management cat foods singe it adds bulk and tends to fill up a cat so they eat less

Fortiflora gives my cats diarrhea fairly often AND their stools are dark/almost black...may just be my wierd cats as there's lots of them that take it..

Cellulose is fine in medicines and supplements, but I do not recommend feeding cats foods that use it as a filler (e.g. Hills).

I've used Fortiflora with Bandit for many years (he had his first case of triaditis at age 6), and it's worked well for us. It doesn't seem to nauseate him or cause any ill effect despite his pancreatitis issues. But seriously, every cat with pancreatitis is different--it's not a disease like diabetes where you can say feed this food, or give this supplement and it will work. Each pancreatitis kitty has different things that work, and don't work for the pancreatitis. It's a huge matter of trial and error--so my mantra with the pancreatitis is, if you find something that works, stick with it!

its all rather confusing. I was doing lots of research last night on probiotics. are human probiotics ok to give to cats? some say yes some say no. is fortiflora a decent probiotic? some say yes some say no. are probiotics even necessary? yes and no. and then there are ones that are recommended, by some, that have inactive ingredients that are questionable. my head was spinning and it left me completely unable to make a decision.

my vet had given me fortiflora, so i'm sticking with that for now and watching mr b's bathroom habits closely. he has been on fortiflora in the past without troubles.
