Good morning! Second morning with the new reduced dose and Hugo looks pretty good. Even with this dose he does quite big drops, so I have been giving LC to slow him down. He still bounces in the end of every cycle, but clears them faster too. Seeing so many kitties on the list who have made it otj brings hope to us. We really hope to see Hugo's name on the list too some day. :)

Here is Hugo doing some stretches! His tallness never seizes to amaze me.

That was some dive, Hugo. No wonder you bounce. With your build, I guess we should not be surprised if you are a bit of a gymnast/acrobat! It might be easier on your mama, though, if you were just a little less dramatic.

His bounces are pretty short now, Tiina. Hopefully they'll be less dramatic soon, too. He also seems to be coming down the dosing scale in a bit of a hurry. That must be very nerve wracking for you.

It's very nerve wracking...He surprises me every time with his big dives and I panic if he refuses food.

Hugo has always been very slim and I used to think that diabetes comes to overweight kitties who just sleep and eat. I often wonder why Hugo got this illness because he is the athlete of the family, and so I blame myself for feeding him wrong. I go through so many emotions every day, feeling sorry for him (and sometimes myself). He doesn't like the new foods and he has to eat it for the rest of his life. To me food is something to enjoy, not only a fuel that is measured and planned carefully. I feel like I'm taking away something from him, but his health comes first. Feeling ill is not enjoyable life so I keep myself convinced that the new diet gives him a new life, so he can become the athletic cat again he once was.

No point blaming yourself for what you didn't know. What matters is what you do once you do know so you should be patting yourself on the back not feeling guilty :)

I'm sure Hugo will adjust to his diet. It's like someone that's been living on lollies and then tries fruit. To start off with the fruit doesn't taste good. Give it a little time and the fruit tastes delicious and sweet while the lollies taste overly fake sweet and disgusting!

Everytime I see his pic I want to rub noses with him :cat:

Thanks, I will tell myself that in the future too when the feelings of guilt and selfblame try to overcome me. Eight years of feeding him wrong, and also my other cats too. :(

He is such a lovely cat, purring and friendly. He'd love to rub noses with you :cat:

Hugo is looking good on this dose. He is a very handsome kitty. Don't blame yourself for his diabetes. We all did the best we could for our kitties with the knowledge we had. He's getting better and you're taking great care of him now. :bighug:

Tiina

Hugo is looking very good. I have been following his progress and he is shaping up very nicely.

Don't blame yourself for his diabetes. Some kitties are just more prone to it than others. I have seen other people who have overweight cats and feed an exclusive diet of dry food yet their kitty never developed diabetes. My Maxie girlie (sister to Tuxie) was diagnosed about 6 or 7 weeks ago as diabetic. I had been testing her every month or so just because her brother was diabetic and she was fine until the end of January. Suddenly 1 1/2 months later her numbers are way high. She is very slim and has not eaten dry food for over 9 years. So sometimes it just happens. But the positive thing is that you are doing a wonderful job treating Hugo and with any luck (anti-jinx) Hugo will make the OTJ list sometime in the hopefully near future. :bighug:

I just wanted to address the above. We all share those guilty feelings of feeding incorrectly etc. but, with the asthma that Hugo has, those inhaler I do believe contain steroids. Steroids cause transient diabetes in cats. As long as he needs to be on the inhalers with steroids, he could continue to need exogenous insulin. This isn't all your fault. So, please don't beat yourself up. :bighug:

Thanks everyone :) Hugo did a big bounce again late this afternoon, from +7 157 to +9 409.

PMPS 315, +2 113. Diving again...And refusing the LC food I try to offer to make him surf. I wonder if this is why he bounces so much, because he won't eat the LC. So frustrating!

Do you have any Medium Carb food in the 10-15% carb range? Maybe a tsp or so of MC and he might eat that for you.

He ate a teaspoon of chicken canned food, 2.5% of carbs. Probably not enough to keep him surfing, since he likes to drop more usually.

I have Friskies in jelly, Gourmet in gravy and Felix in Jelly. Those are all under 10% or a bit over, but have sugars or other added baddies.

Today arrived the new meter @Gill & George suggested for Hugo, the SD Codefree for humans. I tested it at PMPS with the human meter I use now and surprisingly the results given are quite different:

CareSens N Pop 17.5 mmol/l (315)
SD Codefree 20.5mmol/l (367)

I started to wonder about the difference, if I use the new meter when I ran out of test strips for the old one, how do I know when he's too low? Would 6mmol/l be the same as 3mmol/l in my current meter? Both are human meters, that's why this is so puzzling.

There can be a 20% variance in meter readings. This is allowed by the manufacturers. It shows up more in higher numbers. Those numbers are not that far apart. If you test yourself, you'll most likely see numbers that are closer. You should trust the reading you get on whichever meter you choose to use. If you keep comparing meter readings, you can drive yourself crazy. I've done that in the past.

I understand :) I just thought that human meters always show almost the same and pet meters about 20% different.

Hugo's +3 is 68.

Hi Hugo. I see we have same hours :D I think we are in same time zone. Do you give him shot at 7.00 or 8.00? Btw i see you have really colorful ss but he have really beautiful curve. Good boy! I wish you easy night!

Hi Tacka! We are only one hour ahead of you. I give Hugo his shot always at 7.00, and 19.00. I think our cats have been diagnosed nearly at the same time too :) It's so nice to meet people from all over the world here. I haven't been very active on the forum, because frankly I still don't have much of a clue with what I'm doing with Hugo's illness! Treating a kitty's diabetes is much harder than I thought. The wisdom these people have here is remarkable. But I hope I have learned something, or slowly gettin there...

I wish you an easy night too with your Tacka. Your kitty is reacting amazingly well to insulin, much better than my Hugo when we started on Lantus. Keep up the good work! :bighug:

I m just sorry that i didn t came on this forum earlier. It is really amazing how helpful it is and how great people are here. And i am so pleased that Tačka wasn t going too low in past because i had no information what to do in that case. First time when she went on 2.7 (i accidentally measured that time) i took her to the vet for nuthin rally.
We are on right way i think. I keep fingers cross for both of our cats. :cat: Have a good night Tiina and Hugo! :bighug:

Hi Tiina,

My sd meter also measured a little higher than the freestyle freedom lite, but when I swapped, George was diving and I was running out of the freestyle strips!! I did a side by side comparison on one drop of blood as I swapped, and I got a 65 on the freestyle and 67 on the sd code free. At higher numbers when I compared there was much more of a difference with the sd tending to be higher. ( I would say that a number of people mentioned at the time that they had noted that the freestyle freedom lite, with it's tiny drop sample tended to measure low especially higher numbers)

Hope you get on well with it.
