Just checked Ross and he's only at 47 do I just feed him some extra food? Or food with gravy
Yes I use a human meter he's Normaly very high numbers but at +6 today it's was so lowIs this using a human meter??
I would feed him a teaspoon of high carb and retest again in 20 minutes.
I'm doing another test right now to be sure and he still gets a Lil hard food I'm the afternoons but it's a very small amount still doing 3u every 12 hours he's now 68.4 now after 10min of getting foodAlso when you get a chance could you update your spreadsheet with the dose sizes you are giving. Thanks
ETA Also I see you went from hard to all wet about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Are you suing all wet now or still giving some dry food?

.What type of food did you give him? Was it a high carb food?
Oooh, that is a fast drop... Good catch!
(When Caninsulin drops it can really drop fast....)
But Caninsulin also usually (but not always) has quite short cycles. So, hopefully, you will get through this fairly soon. Hang in there...
As Mary Ann asked:
.
With the data we have so far, Mary Ann, I'm not sure.... I'm guessing that this was a 3u dose (?) but it's not clear from the SS.Do you have some suggestions on how much the dose should be reduced tonight? It is about 8 days since the dry food was cut back although he still gives a small amount through the day.

Caninsulin can be tricky, one of the reasons being that it can drop the blood glucose like a proverbial stone. For that reason some of us here feel that, as a general rule, caregivers with cats on Caninsulin/Vetsulin should not 'aim' for nadirs of less than 5mmol/(90mg/dL). Therefore, on that hypothetical basis the dose here should be scaled back dramatically... At this moment (providing there's no history of ketones) I'd suggest cutting the dose by maybe half of the current dose and see what happens (maybe that will level things out a bit)... Tagging @Critter Mom , who has also used Caninsulin...
.

@Ross's mom , please do give us an update.
Are you OK? Is your kitty OK?
We all worry. And some of us chew our fingernails....

I'm so sorry I thought I hit post!! I checked him again at 4 and again now he's at 170 @4:00 pm and 171 right now I'll be monitoring him all day and I will update my spreadsheet asap... Also should I reduduce tonight's shot I've never adjusted units before@Ross's mom , please do give us an update.

I've updated my spreadsheet also called the vet as well he also recommended to lower the dosage to 2u and monitor him very close but as of right now 7pm he was just a 383.4 so his numbers are back up but I'm still going to reduce the units for today I think that's the best idea please correct me if I'm wrong in anyway thanks so muchThank you for your update!!
The lower numbers may be from cutting back on the dry food. It can take a while for the effects of dry food to clear the system.
Eliz had suggested cutting the dose in 1/2 because of the low numbers and the type of insulin. She is more familiar with Caninsulin/Vetsulin than I am since she is from the UK where it is always the first type of insulin used. She has also tagged another member who is familiar with Caninsulin to see what her thought are.
It would be a great help if you could bring your spreadsheet up to date with the doses for every day and all the numbers you got from today as well.
Thanks![]()

PS: As soon as I would see a nadir under 100 for safety I would reduce the dose if it were my cat: Caninsulin's more unpredictable than the likes of Lantus when it comes to guestimating the kind of drop one is going to see on the next cycle.

So far he's not showing and change at all when his numbers are sky high he's loving and comes to play and even when he was at that 47 this morning he was still the same his eyes look great he's eating drinking and using thy box! If not for home test I wouldn't even know! Before bed tonight just a. Few mins ago he was way up there again 496 but I still only gave 2 units of insulin instead of 3 I hope that was the right way to go!Only just saw the tag (been tough going with Saoirse over the last week or so).
I think Eliz's dosing suggestion is a good one. Looking at the spreadsheet I did ask myself whether those blacks might have an element of bounce influence in them because of too high a dose. Bounces aren't as easy to recognise with Caninsulin because of the cup-shaped response patterns it typically produces.
@Ross's mom - Is there any difference in your kitty's clinical signs between the beginning and end parts of a cycle and the middle part of a cycle when the Caninsulin is at its strongest period of effect?

Yes I'm waiting to Do another test to see his level tonight I don't want him dropping in my sleep! I'm hoping he will level out sometime soon this up and down is very stressfulThat 496 maybe a bounce from the low of 47 earlier today. I'm glad to see you reduced the dose tonight. Is it possible for you to get another reading sometime within the first 2-3 hours the night cycle tonight just to be on the safe side. That was quite the drop on the day cycle today and a reading at 2-3 hours post shot tonight will tell you how fast Ross is dropping on 2 units.
So far he's doing OK he went really really high last night but this morning he was OK I reduced to 2 u I'll update my spreadsheet from last night and today! How did ye get on last night?

Ah, he's found one of these ...he went really really high last night
Hahahaah OMG yes I can't figure him out just yet but I'm learning lolAh, he's found one of these ...

And if that 3.8 isn't a typo I'd suggest reducing the dose a bit more, given that this is Caninsulin. If that 3.8 is in the current cycle then monitor Ross' BG closely.

Again. If you're using an Alphatrak meter that 3.8 is too low and you DEFINITELY need to reduce the dose.
